The Terumaru Battery Project: A Step Towards Energy Independence in Tokyo



In an ambitious initiative, Tokyu Power Supply is set to launch the Terumaru Battery Project, aimed at installing home batteries at no cost to residents in Tokyo. Starting from July 16, 2026, this project seeks to give families access to renewable energy solutions while simultaneously promoting energy conservation and resilience against power outages.

Background of the Project


The Terumaru Battery Project is part of Tokyo's wider strategy to encourage the adoption of battery systems for residential energy use. This effort aligns with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's initiatives including the promotion of battery installation in homes and implementing Demand Response (DR) systems for better energy management. Through the integration of home batteries, Tokyu Power Supply aims to stabilize the urban power grid and support households that currently do not have solar power systems installed.

From June 18, 2026, the project opened for preliminary applications, leading up to the formal application period that starts on July 16 at 14:00 JST. With the project, eligible households will receive the newest generation of batteries from Omron Social Solutions, featuring designs that significantly reduce space requirements inside homes.

How It Works


The installed batteries will operate under a sophisticated system that charges during low electricity cost periods and discharges during high-cost intervals. This enables families to save on their energy bills easily without changing their electricity usage habits. Furthermore, in the event of a blackout due to disasters or infrastructure failures, the battery system can transition to self-sustaining operations, allowing continuous power supply to households.

Eligible households must be owner-occupied, single-family homes without existing solar installations in Tokyo (excluding islands). The project targets properties built post-June 1, 1981, and requires participants to be under the age of 75. Additionally, internet requirements and other technical specifications, including participation in an ongoing management program, need to be agreed upon to facilitate remote control of the batteries.

Significance of the Initiative


This project is not just about installing batteries; it’s a significant move towards enhancing local resilience in energy management. A partnership agreement between Tokyu Power Supply and Setagaya Ward means residents will receive proactive guidance on utilizing renewable energy effectively. The company anticipates that trial data from the previous year's installations, which reported a customer satisfaction rate of 94%, will only improve as more homes get involved. Last year's projects confirmed potential savings of up to 3,294 yen per month in electricity costs, with an average saving observation of about 1,589 yen monthly. These notable results amplified by proactive energy management strategies in diverse household structures exhibit the transformative potential of the Terumaru Battery Project.
