Kathleen Fedoronko Takes Charge at Karmanos Cancer Institute



The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute has welcomed Kathleen Fedoronko, MSN, RN, OCN, as its new Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President of Patient Care Services. With over 25 years of experience in ambulatory and acute healthcare, and having spent 20 of those years at Karmanos, Fedoronko is poised to make a significant impact in her new role.

Fedoronko officially assumed her position in June, succeeding Kathleen Carolin, RN, BSN, MSA, who recently retired. In her new capacity, Fedoronko will oversee nursing practices across inpatient and outpatient services, ensuring the highest standards of patient care are upheld. She reports directly to Brian Gamble, the president of Karmanos Cancer Hospital and Cancer Network.

Expressing her commitment to oncology nursing, Fedoronko stated, “I’ve dedicated my career to oncology nursing, and it’s been my goal to continue leading excellent nurses at one of the best cancer centers in the country. At Karmanos, our staff are incredible, and we truly put the patient first when helping them throughout their cancer journey. We strive to be a cancer center where patients, their family, and caregivers feel at home and know they are given the best care available.”

Fedoronko's background includes pivotal roles in enhancing patient care quality at Karmanos. Her previous positions encompass a range of responsibilities from staff nursing on a bone marrow and stem cell transplant team to leadership roles that significantly influenced the hospital's nursing practices. Her experience has been instrumental in preparing the institute for important accreditation processes, including those from the Joint Commission.

Highly regarded for her contributions to oncology nursing, Fedoronko has garnered respect within her field. She began her journey at Karmanos as a staff nurse and escalated through various leadership roles, essentially shaping the nursing team and their practices. She has a history of improving patient outcomes and fostering a positive work environment.

In addition to her leadership skills, Fedoronko is noted for her commitment to evidence-based practice in nursing, which emphasizes quality patient care, high satisfaction rates, and leadership. Her engagement with various nursing organizations, including the Metro Detroit Oncology Nursing Society (MDONS) and the national Oncology Nursing Society, indicates her ongoing dedication to professional development in her field. Notably, she was recognized as the MDONS Outstanding Advanced Practice Nurse of the Year in 2019.

Fedoronko holds a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Detroit Mercy and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Wayne State University. Her rich educational background complements her extensive practical experience in oncology nursing.
