Dr. Seth Gemme Takes on New Role at Baystate Health



Baystate Health has officially announced the promotion of Dr. Seth Gemme, who will now serve as the Chief Physician Executive and President of Baystate Medical Practices. This significant appointment reflects Dr. Gemme's considerable contributions and dedication to the organization over his nearly ten years of service.

In his new capacity, Dr. Gemme will play a crucial role as a trusted advisor to both Baystate Health and Health New England leaders. His voice will carry considerable weight in critical enterprise decision-making, especially as the organization continues its journey toward a clinically driven and physician-led healthcare system.

“Dr. Gemme has a unique blend of medical expertise and operational leadership that perfectly suits the demands of our organization and the communities we prioritize,” shared Peter D. Banko, President and CEO of Baystate Health. Banko expressed his confidence in Dr. Gemme’s capacity to lead efforts that enhance access to care, promote physician engagement, and ensure high standards of quality in healthcare delivery.

Dr. Gemme has been an integral member of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Baystate since 2017, taking on increasingly responsible leadership roles. Previously, he held positions such as Chair of the Emergency Medicine Department and Chief of the Emergency Department at Baystate Wing Hospital. His wealth of experience equips him to spearhead improvements aimed at streamlining hospital operations across the five hospitals under Baystate Health's umbrella.

Throughout his career, Dr. Gemme has effectively led numerous innovative operational initiatives. Noteworthy among these is the development of the Vertical Model of Care at Baystate Medical Center, a transformative approach that significantly improved patient flow in emergency settings based on patient needs. He also introduced a real-time emergency department surge tool, which has provided valuable insights during peak periods of patient demand.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from Westfield State University and has earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University at Buffalo. Presently, he is pursuing a Master of Business Administration from the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His achievements have earned him the recognition of being named one of Modern Healthcare magazine's 40 Under 40.
