ITU's AI for Good Lab: A New Era for Developing Nations

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has launched the AI for Good Lab, a groundbreaking initiative designed to assist developing and emerging economies in deploying artificial intelligence (AI) solutions responsibly and at scale. Announced during the AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva, this laboratory is a key part of the UN’s AI for Good Impact initiative, aiming to enhance the capabilities of nations by moving beyond isolated pilot projects in AI.

The lab is built upon three core pillars: national readiness and policy frameworks for AI, skill development, and the establishment of public infrastructures dedicated to AI. According to Dr. Ebtesam Almazrouei, the head of AI for Good Impact, "We are entering the decade of AI deployment. Countries are no longer questioning if AI can transform society; they are asking how to implement it responsibly and inclusively on a large scale. The AI for Good Lab will help transform proven ideas into national capabilities and measurable outcomes."

In support of its mission, the AI for Good Lab will provide assessments of national AI readiness and offer strategic recommendations to help governments set their priorities. Additionally, it plans to develop a diverse talent pool for policymakers, entrepreneurs, students, and innovators, facilitated through initiatives like the AI for Good Innovation Factory which has mobilized over 1,000 startups from more than 80 countries.

Furthermore, the lab intends to foster public infrastructures for AI by enabling access to open datasets, computing resources, reusable AI models, and open-source tools tailored to vital sectors including health, education, agriculture, and mobility.

The AI for Good Lab leverages work previously undertaken in the AI for Good Sandbox, which has been active in ten pilot countries—Cameroon, India, Mozambique, Nepal, Peru, Tanzania, the United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. It collaborates with the African Telecommunications Union, national governments, and ITU regional offices to create local hubs and scale successful projects across various regions.

Dr. Ebtesam Almazrouei, a global leader in AI, envisions a future where every country has the chance to shape its own AI landscape.
