Bridging Continents: Agricultural Innovations in Drought-Prone Areas



A remarkable research initiative, spanning over 16,000 kilometers and 15 years, has brought together the expertise of Lanzhou University in China and agricultural regions across East Africa. Led by Professor Xiong Youcai, this extensive collaboration aims to adapt Chinese dryland farming techniques to local conditions in East Africa, resulting in a transformative agricultural exchange.

The Collaboration Journey


The project, which involved 38 research and field visits, focused on developing and sharing methods to combat chronic drought challenges faced by many farmers in East Africa. The central innovation in this project is mulch film technology. Originally created on the Loess Plateau of China, the technology has undergone significant adaptation and refinement over the years, effectively addressing water scarcity and enhancing crop resilience.
Statistical data from the project indicates a staggering increase in crop yields for staple foods—rising by as much as 120%. This leap is attributed to the ability of farmers to cultivate previously unproductive red soil, converting it into fertile farmland.

Hands-On Training and Knowledge Exchange


The initiative’s success hinges on a hands-on, collaborative approach to knowledge sharing. The Lanzhou University team worked closely with local farmers, engaging in everything from land preparation to on-site training sessions.
