The Evolution of Yunnan Power Grid's High-Speed Bearer Network with Huawei SPN

A New Era for Yunnan Power Grid's Communications

Yunnan Power Grid Co., Ltd. stands as a cornerstone of energy distribution in Southwest China, playing a pivotal role in the transmission of clean energy and the modernization of smart grid technologies. The region's unique geographical challenges and elongated transmission lines have necessitated an urgent transformation in its digital infrastructure. To address these challenges, Yunnan Power Grid has chosen to implement Huawei’s Smart Passive Network (SPN) as a cornerstone of its network evolution.

Embracing Change Amidst Challenges

Yunnan Power Grid is dedicated to significantly enhancing its capabilities as outlined in both the 14th and 15th Five-Year Plans. The decision to adopt the SPN technology is a strategic move toward improving its communication ecosystem, as it faces mounting pressure from an increase in service complexity and production data. Launching large-scale implementations across 16 cities is set to establish a robust communication foundation for the next two decades.

Transformational Benefits of SPN

Bandwidth Breakthrough

The introduction of the SPN network has led to a revolutionary enhancement in bandwidth capacity. Previously constrained by limits ranging from 155 Mbit/s to 10 Gbit/s, the new SPN architecture allows for access layer bandwidth at substations, power stations, and customer centers to reach up to 1 Gbit/s, thus meeting the stringent standards set by China Southern Power Grid. Consequently, the aggregation and core layers can scale up to 50 or even 100 Gbit/s, depending on the specific site requirements and service demands.

Moreover, this upgrade supports advanced services, including high-bandwidth applications such as transmission video surveillance, ensuring that the power grid's operations run smoothly and efficiently. It effectively addresses the bandwidth bottleneck, paving the way for future expansions and improvements in service delivery.

Enhanced Operational Efficiency

Another significant advantage of deploying Huawei's SPN is the drastic improvement in inspection and maintenance procedures. The smart architecture allows for real-time monitoring of service level agreements (SLA), checking for latency and packet loss while enabling rapid fault localization. For example, the time required for a single inspection has been reduced from an average of 30 minutes to just 3 minutes at Qujing Power Supply Bureau. This improvement not only minimizes maintenance costs associated with traditional SDH equipment but also enhances operational responsiveness.

Through advanced monitoring techniques, major defects can now be detected up to 15 days earlier than before. Over six months, it has been observed that site visits required for maintenance have decreased by 45.54%, falling from 112 visits to just 61. This efficiency contributes to a more streamlined operation overall.

Intelligent Service Transport

Intelligence within service transport has also seen a considerable upgrade thanks to Huawei's SPN solution. It caters to an array of electric power services, ranging from latency-sensitive teleprotection tasks to high-volume video traffic. FlexE hard and soft slicing technology ensures rigid isolation between services, while optimizing bandwidth reuse. The architecture supports both IPv4 and IPv6, facilitating easier access for IoT applications, such as monitoring transmission lines and integrating power resources effectively.

Long-term Investment Protection

The foresight in integrating SPN offers Yunnan Power Grid a framework for long-term sustainability. With the capability of evolving bandwidth from 25 Gbit/s up to 400 Gbit/s, the network allows for low-cost upgrades that prevent the need for repeated construction, ensuring that the grid remains future-proof against growing demands.

Conclusion

The strategic partnership between Huawei and Yunnan Power Grid marks a significant milestone in the evolution of a high-speed bearer network. Aligning with clean energy initiatives and adaptive smart grids positions Yunnan Power Grid as a leader not only in regional energy supply but also in the comprehensive management of smart infrastructure. As they continue this journey, the enhancements with SPN pave a pathway toward a more connected and efficient energy future.
