Canon Achieves Top Marks as a Climate Leader by CDP in 2025

Canon Achieves 'A List' Recognition in Climate Action

In an impressive display of commitment to environmental sustainability, Canon has recently been honored with the highest rating in the climate change sector by the CDP (formerly known as the Carbon Disclosure Project). This prestigious organization based in the UK evaluates major global companies and municipalities on their transparency and leadership in environmental initiatives. Canon's selection as an 'A List' company is no small feat; it marks the fourth consecutive year the company has received such recognition, affirming its position as a leader in climate action.

CDP plays a critical role in promoting corporate accountability around climate change, water security, and deforestation, sending out annual questionnaires to companies around the globe. More than 22,000 organizations were assessed this year, with around 20,000 receiving scores based on their responses. Canon's consistent excellence in report transparency and its comprehensive strategies aimed at mitigating climate impact have solidified its reputation as a pioneering entity in environmental responsibility.

Central to Canon's environmental philosophy is the corporate principle of “kyosei,” or coexistence. This serves as the foundation for their commitment to harmonizing rich living with environmental health. To that end, Canon emphasizes four key areas: climate change, resource circulation, chemicals, and biodiversity. Among these, climate change mitigation is a primary focus. The company has set ambitious goals targeting net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across its product lifecycle by 2050, aligning with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) standards.

For the near term, Canon has established GHG reduction targets of 42% for Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 compared to 2022 levels, and a reduction of 25% for Scope 3 emissions from categories 1 and 11 during the same period. These initiatives reflect Canon's proactive approach to minimize environmental impact, reinforcing its commitment to a sustainable future.

Efforts toward achieving these objectives involve a multifaceted strategy. Canon is actively promoting energy-saving programs across its production sites and advancing resource circulation through product reuse and recycling initiatives. The company is dedicated to reducing environmental burden across the entire product lifecycle through innovative practices and technologies.

Moreover, Canon ensures the accuracy of its GHG emission data by obtaining third-party verification, a crucial step that adds credibility to its sustainability claims. This solidifies the recognition granted by CDP and showcases the efficacy of Canon’s ongoing environmental endeavors.

As Canon moves forward, it remains steadfast in its quest to uphold its guiding philosophy of ‘kyosei.’ The company is determined to drive technological innovation and enhance operational efficiency while deepening collaboration with stakeholders. Canon aims to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society, emphasizing that corporate responsibility should extend beyond mere profitability to encompass broader environmental stewardship.

The commitment to these values reflects a growing recognition among businesses that sustainable practices are not just a regulatory requirement, but a strategic avenue for long-term success and social impact. As climate change becomes an increasingly pressing issue, Canon’s exemplary approach serves as a valuable model for other companies seeking to make meaningful contributions to environmental preservation.
