Hansa Biopharma Achieves Major Milestone with SERB Licensing Deal for Idefirix in Europe and MENA

Hansa Biopharma's Strategic Licensing Transaction with SERB Pharmaceuticals

In a landmark move for the biopharmaceutical industry, Hansa Biopharma AB, a company based in Lund, Sweden, announced the completion of a significant licensing transaction valued at €115 million with SERB S.A. This partnership is aimed at the commercialization of Idefirix, a pioneering treatment for kidney transplant patients in Europe and the MENA region. This move not only highlights the evolving landscape of rare disease therapeutics but also marks a crucial advancement in addressing unmet medical needs for sensitized transplant patients.

Idefirix, which has gained conditional authorization from the European Commission, is specifically designed to treat highly sensitized adult kidney transplant patients who have a positive crossmatch test against a suitable deceased donor. This critical approval allows healthcare providers to offer a previously unavailable treatment option to a segment of the patient population that has long struggled to find compatible organ donors.

Under the terms of the agreement, Hansa Biopharma will receive an upfront payment of €110 million, followed by an additional €5 million contingent upon the full approval of Idefirix by the European Medicines Agency (EMA). This transaction reflects a strategic approach by both entities to leverage their respective strengths in pursuit of improved patient outcomes. SERB, known for its global reach and proven track record in rare diseases, aims to enhance the accessibility of Idefirix in solid organ transplantation.

Renée Aguiar-Lucander, CEO of Hansa Biopharma, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, "The closing of this transaction marks an important milestone for Hansa. With SERB as our partner in Europe and MENA, we believe Idefirix will benefit from additional expertise, reach, and resources."

The collaboration is expected to significantly bolster Hansa’s financial standing while it prepares for the potential launch of imlifidase, the active ingredient in Idefirix, in the U.S. market, pending regulatory approval. By collaborating with SERB, Hansa will not only expand its market presence but also enhance its R&D efforts, paving the way for more innovative treatments in the transplant sector.

SERB Pharmaceuticals, with a 25-year legacy in the pharmaceutical industry, specializes in addressing the needs of patients facing rare diseases and provides a robust commercial infrastructure that will facilitate the rollout of Idefirix. The company boasts over 70 commercial products and operates in 18 countries, underscoring its capability to execute the responsibilities associated with this partnership.

This licensing agreement is further supported by a comprehensive regulatory strategy. Hansa Biopharma will apply for the transfer of the Market Authorization of Idefirix to SERB while continuing to support SERB in the full approval process. This collaborative approach ensures that patients will have access to necessary treatments while adhering to stringent regulatory standards.

Looking ahead, Hansa Biopharma is committed to advancing its clinical pipeline beyond Idefirix. The company is actively engaged in collecting further clinical evidence to support additional developments in immunotherapy for complex immune disorders. Hansa's IgG-cleaving enzyme technology platform serves as a foundation for transformative therapies intended to address unmet patient needs.

As kidney disease continues to affect millions globally, innovative solutions like Idefirix represent hope for patients awaiting transplants. Approximately 170,000 patients in the U.S. and Europe are currently on transplant waiting lists, emphasizing the critical nature of advancements in this field. As this collaboration unfolds, it holds the promise of not only improving health outcomes for transplant patients but also enriching the understanding of immunological therapies in the biopharmaceutical landscape.

In summary, Hansa Biopharma’s partnership with SERB Pharmaceuticals signifies a monumental step forward in the realm of transplantation medicine. By merging their expertise and resources, both companies are poised to enhance the lives of countless patients, redefining the possibilities within the treatment landscape for kidney transplant patients across Europe and MENA.
