Prime Star Takes a Significant Step Towards Carbon Neutrality by Measuring GHG Emissions

Prime Star's Commitment to a Sustainable Future

Prime Star Co., Ltd., based in Minato-ku, Tokyo, has embarked on an important initiative to measure greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as part of their efforts towards achieving a carbon-neutral society. The company, led by CEO Chiyo Shimoda, is rolling out the measurement of both Scope 1 (direct emissions) and Scope 2 (indirect emissions), aiming to proactively address climate change.

Background and Purpose of GHG Emission Measurement

In recent years, responding to climate change has become a crucial aspect of sustainable corporate growth. Acknowledging this, Prime Star is driven by the philosophy that "this planet must remain prime for generations to come." Through their energy business, the company aims to contribute to society while facilitating a transition to a sustainable future. The measurement of GHG emissions is deemed as the first major step towards carbon neutrality, allowing the company to benchmark its emissions accurately and set concrete reduction targets.

Understanding the GHG Protocol

The Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol categorizes emissions into three different scopes: Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3. These classifications serve as international standards for calculating and reporting GHG emissions throughout the supply chain—from production to disposal. Scope 1 involves direct emissions from owned or controlled sources, whereas Scope 2 consists of emissions associated with the usage of electricity, heat, or steam provided by external suppliers.

Results of the Measurement and Future Initiatives

The measurement conducted in collaboration with Zevero, targeting the fiscal year 2024, revealed the following results:
  • - Scope 1 (Direct Emissions): 8.98 t-CO₂e - Emissions from sources that are owned or controlled by the company, such as gasoline consumption of company cars.
  • - Scope 2 (Indirect Emissions): 19.90 t-CO₂e - Emissions resulting from the utilization of electricity and heat that are supplied by other entities, including electricity consumption at business sites.
  • - Total GHG Emissions: 28.88 t-CO₂e

Now, Prime Star aims to use this measurement as a benchmark to formulate specific reduction targets. To achieve these goals, the company plans to implement various initiatives focused on enhancing energy efficiency and transitioning to renewable energy sources.
Furthermore, they will also engage in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) activities to evaluate the environmental impact throughout the complete lifecycle of their products and services, aiming to minimize their environmental footprint from every dimension of their business activities.
