Aobadai Tokyu Square's First Sustainability Month Event
Aobadai Tokyu Square, a community-centered shopping facility managed by Tokyu Malls Development, is set to launch its inaugural Environmental Month event titled "Sustainable Action at Aobadai Tokyu Square!!" from June 1 to June 30, 2025. This initiative aims to raise awareness about sustainable practices and foster a culture of eco-consciousness in the community, providing a series of activities and workshops that encourage visitors to engage with sustainability in their daily lives.
Commitment to Sustainability
Aobadai Tokyu Square has been actively involved in sustainability efforts throughout the year. Hosting events during Japan’s Environmental Month in June is a strategic move to further educate customers about the facility’s and individual stores' sustainable actions. Since November 2020, the center has been collecting unwanted clothing from customers, processing it for reuse and recycling, contributing approximately 14 tons of materials to a circular economy in 2024 alone. Due to the positive response from visitors, the center plans to expand its collection boxes starting June 1.
Exciting Workshops and Events
Activities on June 8
On June 8, the facility will host a range of interactive events aimed at promoting the use of reusable bags and reducing plastic waste. These include:
- - My Bag Workshop: Elaborating on its environmental initiatives, the Aobadai district will facilitate the creation of original reusable bags, adorned with illustrations of Eo, the mascot from the Yokohama Resource Recycling Bureau. Participants who fill out a survey can receive a mini tomato growing kit as a gift (while supplies last).
- - Brand Valuation Experience: A workshop by the brand purchasing specialist "Nanboya" to educate attendees about the connection between reselling and reusing. Participants will learn about valuation by assessing real jewelry and gold items.
- - Upcycling Workshop: Attendees can use colorful scrap materials generated during the sock manufacturing process to craft wreaths and coasters, promoting a hands-on approach to waste reduction.
Other Notable Events
Additional activities throughout the month will include:
- - Kids Flea Market: Children can buy and sell items in a fun, interactive setting that teaches them about the value of money.
- - Unused Goods Collection Event: Set for June 28, this event will expand beyond clothing to include a variety of household and hobby items, encouraging community members to give their unused possessions a second life.
Continuing Sustainable Practices
Aobadai Tokyu Square is also involved in projects such as the "FRY to FLY Project," which aims to ensure that aircraft operate using Sustainable Aviation Fuel derived from recycled cooking oil collected from homes and businesses. Additionally, starting in October 2024, the facility will transition to 100% renewable electricity, further demonstrating its commitment to achieving a decarbonized society.
The company recently launched the "Tokyu Malls Development Sustainability Action" initiative in 2023, reinforcing its dedication to sustainable urban development. By collaborating with local governments, businesses, and tenants, the company strives to create a sustainable society for future generations.
