Singapore Management University Triumphs in Gobi Desert Challenge

In a significant achievement, the Singapore Management University's (SMU) team from the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) program in Accounting and Finance secured the prestigious Model Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Team Award at the renowned Gobi Desert Challenge. Competing against over 100 teams from various esteemed institutions in the region, SMU's performance highlighted their dedication to sustainability and teamwork in a challenging environment.

The Gobi Desert Challenge, widely recognized as one of the premier endurance events in the Greater China EMBA and DBA circuit, took place over four grueling days, testing the endurance and collaborative spirit of senior executives, entrepreneurs, and doctoral candidates. This year's edition focused on the themes of ESG and "business for good," making it a fitting backdrop for SMU's exemplary display of environmental stewardship.

Led by the SMU School of Accountancy, the 14-member team undertook a demanding 58-kilometer trek through the unforgiving landscape of the Gobi Desert. The recognition they received for their practices in ESG implementation under real-world conditions set them apart from their competitors. Enduring extreme temperatures of up to 30°C, the team demonstrated excellent coordination and a strong commitment to sustainability principles during their trek.

The event organizers commended SMU not only for their athletic prowess but also for integrating academic research into the endurance challenge. This synergy led to substantial contributions to the ongoing development of the event’s ESG framework. Members of the team, which included doctoral candidates and alumni who balance their educational pursuits with professional leadership roles, exemplified the program’s focus on integrating academic rigor with practical application in business.

Professor Liandong Zhang, Dean of the SMU School of Accountancy who helped guide the participating team, expressed pride in the group’s accomplishment: "Earning the sole winner title among more than 100 teams is a remarkable feat for us and showcases SMU's commitment to environmental and social governance. The challenge was not just one of physical endurance; it was about mental resilience and making responsible decisions under pressure. Just as in business, we must support each other and adhere to shared values, even in difficult situations."

Participant Wang Yi, a Managing Director at Huatai United Securities and a member of the DBA class of 2025, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of resilience and teamwork in achieving their goals throughout the arduous journey.

In addition to the physical challenge, Professor Zhang and alumni contributed to the event's intellectual aspect by participating in a talk and panel discussion focused on artificial intelligence. They engaged with senior executives from various business schools across Asia, sharing insights that reflect the depth of knowledge fostered within SMU's DBA program.

This victory not only enhances SMU's reputation within the regional executive education community but also reinforces its mission to cultivate leaders committed to effecting real-world change through scholarly pursuits. The focus of their DBA program is not solely on advanced research but also on practical impacts within industries, preparing candidates to influence management practices positively.

The SMU-ZJU DBA program, a collaboration between Singapore Management University and Zhejiang University's School of Management, aims to prepare scholars and senior executives for impactful research that bridges theory and practice. By offering courses designed to enhance industrial application and fostering pedagogical skills through specialized workshops, the program equips participants with the fundamental skills necessary for advancing sustainability in management practices and governance.

In conclusion, SMU's success at the Gobi Desert Challenge exemplifies the importance of combining academic excellence with real-world application, paving the way for the next generation of purpose-driven leaders in the arena of business. As organizations increasingly strive for sustainability, the insights gained from such events will continue to guide future practices towards creating a more responsible corporate landscape.
