49North Secures $3.7 Million Contract for Coalition Shared Database

In a significant stride toward bolstering military capabilities, 49North, a subsidiary of MDA Space Ltd., has been awarded a contract by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) worth approximately $3.7 million CAD. This contract aims to create a Coalition Shared Database (CSD) for Canada’s Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) program, consolidating 49North's position as a key player in Canadian defense integration.

Strengthening Canadian Defense

The awarding of this contract extends the existing partnership between 49North and GA-ASI, building on a broader $74.4 million RPAS contract. This collaboration forms part of Team SkyGuardian Canada, which includes other notable contributors like CAE and L3Harris WESCAM. The focus is on delivering a fleet of 11 state-of-the-art CQ-9B Guardian aircraft to the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) by 2028. The Guardian aircraft is based on the proven MQ-9B platform, which is already entrusted to various international defense forces.

The new CSD is designed to meet NATO STANAG 4559 standards, ensuring its capability to support multinational operations. This system will facilitate real-time intelligence sharing among allied nations, enhancing collaboration within the military sphere. By allowing for the storage, management, and distribution of Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) data, the CSD will help maintain a cohesive operational picture while ensuring that individual nations retain control over their data.

Enhancing Operational Performance

Originally envisioned as a separate project, the CSD's integration into the RPAS program was initiated per the RCAF’s request, aimed at achieving seamless operational capabilities. GA-ASI’s selection of 49North for this significant task was influenced by the latter’s extensive experience in coalition data-sharing and its adeptness in integrating complex systems.

49North possesses over five decades of experience in defense integration, demonstrating success through previous programs like CP-140 and other CSD interfaces for UAV operations in Afghanistan. This portfolio of experience underscores 49North's track record as a reliable partner in mission-critical environments, reflecting their commitment to enhancing Canada’s defense infrastructure.

A Growing Portfolio of Defense Capabilities

The CSD will be housed within the primary RPAS Ground Control Centre located in Ottawa, with all design, integration, and testing activities conducted at 49North’s Richmond, British Columbia facility. The anticipated delivery to GA-ASI is set for August 2027. This initiative underscores 49North’s expanding role in the defense sector, with a mandate focused on integrating advanced technologies across various operational domains.

Along with the CSD, 49North is involved in additional projects within the CQ-9B Guardian program that include the production of Certifiable Ground Control Stations, Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) Radio software, and automated targeting classification image processing capabilities.

As part of its mission, 49North integrates autonomous systems, advanced sensing technologies, and secure digital platforms, indicating a comprehensive approach to defense solutions. This integration will enable Canada and its allies to operate more effectively across land, air, and maritime domains.
