Future of STEM Scholars Initiative Opens Applications for 2027 Class

The Future of STEM Scholars Initiative (FOSSI) has announced the launch of applications for its upcoming class of scholars, marking a continuing commitment to foster talented students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This initiative aims to provide these students with vital scholarships, mentorships, internships, and career development opportunities designed to support a successful trajectory in the chemical industry.

Launched in 2020 by the American Chemistry Council (ACC), the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), and key partners, FOSSI has rapidly established itself as one of the premier industry-supported scholarship programs in the country. Over the years, it has awarded more than 900 scholarships, raised upwards of $40 million, and empowered students across more than 40 HBCUs nationwide, all dedicated to cultivating a new generation of professionals in the chemical sector.

Applications are open to high school seniors keen on pursuing STEM-related degrees at HBCUs while aspiring towards a career in the chemical domain. Each recipient of a FOSSI scholarship benefits from an annual award of $10,000 for four years – a significant investment that covers tuition and other educational costs. Beyond financial support, scholars are connected with leadership development programs, professional mentoring, internships, and networking opportunities provided by sponsoring companies.

As the application period commences, FOSSI celebrates its recent graduates' accomplishments and embraces the incoming class of scholars who embarked on their academic journeys this year, graduating in 2030. The impact of FOSSI's scholarship program is evidenced by outcomes from its inaugural classes, where scholars have achieved graduation rates nearly three times higher than the average at HBCUs. An impressive 80% of graduates are either working full-time in STEM fields or continuing their education at the graduate level, demonstrating the effectiveness of the initiative in creating pathways to successful careers.

Mark Costa, Chair of the FOSSI Advisory Board, expressed his enthusiasm about the program's impact: “One of the most rewarding aspects of FOSSI is witnessing talented young individuals gain the confidence and support to chase their dreams. When we invest in our students today, we are fostering tomorrow’s innovators, scientists, engineers, and leaders.” Notably, many of the program’s first graduates are currently building successful careers within the chemical industry, emphasizing FOSSI’s role as a catalyst for change.

FOSSI scholars articulate that the initiative's benefits extend beyond monetary support. Samiya Miller, a FOSSI scholar from North Carolina A&T State University, shared, “My aspiration is to lead pioneering research in the chemical field. FOSSI has made that dream attainable through their support. They have truly transformed my ambitions into clear goals, inspiring me to aim even higher.”
