KPMG PRI Achieves Milestone as First ANAB-Accredited Body for Clean Fuel Certifications in the U.S.
KPMG PRI's Groundbreaking Accreditation for Clean Fuels
KPMG Performance Registrar Inc. (KPMG PRI), a subsidiary of KPMG Canada, has become a trailblazer by securing the first accreditation from the American National Standards Institute's National Accreditation Board (ANAB). This accreditation allows KPMG PRI to conduct certified evaluations under the critical Section 45Z Clean Fuel Production Credit in the United States.
This newly granted ability significantly enhances KPMG PRI's role in certifying fuel production volumes and carbon-intensity information essential for producers aiming to take advantage of Section 45Z tax credits. As an accredited entity under ISO 14065, an internationally recognized standard, KPMG PRI is now better positioned to provide essential certifications that enhance credibility in environmental claims.
Tom Darling, Partner and Senior Vice President at KPMG PRI, expressed the significance of this milestone, stating, "This accreditation marks an important step for both KPMG PRI and the clean-fuel sector, providing the independent validation that producers, regulators, and market participants need as they navigate the complexities of clean fuel production and compliance with evolving regulations."
Section 45Z, established to catalyze the clean fuels sector, delivers an income tax credit incentivizing the production of qualifying clean transportation fuels in the U.S. The tax credit is based on production volumes and the lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions rates associated with those fuels. This financial incentive targets the production of lower carbon-intensity fuels and is aimed to be available for qualifying activities starting from January 1, 2025, and lasting up to December 31, 2029, as per updates in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
Daniel Leonard, Managing Director from the Tax Division at KPMG U.S., noted the importance of credible data in accessing the benefits laid out by Section 45Z. He stated, "This represents a significant moment for the U.S. clean fuels segment, which requires reliable, substantiated information for producers to secure the credits. Our accreditation introduces a new layer of verification capacity into the market."
For over a decade, KPMG PRI has been pivotal in providing independent greenhouse gas validation and verification services across various sectors, including clean fuels, manufacturing, power generation, and more. The firm has been recognized as an authority in greenhouse gas validation since it earned ANAB accreditation back in September 2010.
KPMG PRI plans to work in collaboration with KPMG U.S. to assist clean-fuel producers in navigating the intricacies of obtaining Section 45Z certification services.
