CarbonNest Initiates DAC Testing at SUISO no MORI Hub
CarbonNest, a pioneering startup focused on Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology, has commenced testing its innovative DAC device at the SUISO no MORI hub, located within Niterra's facilities in Komaki City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. This initiative aligns with Niterra's larger project to establish a hydrogen society and carbon circulation system.
Background of the Initiative
The urgent need to address rising fossil fuel costs and the structural limits of CO₂ reduction in certain industries has catalyzed the development of technologies capable of directly capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. CarbonNest envisions transforming captured CO₂ into energy that fuels regional growth and is committed to creating a sustainable circular system for its use. By partnering with Niterra, recognized for its strengths in innovation, CarbonNest aims to pioneer new business opportunities in carbon recycling.
Strengths of CarbonNest
What sets CarbonNest apart is not only its expertise in developing DAC hardware but also its sophisticated operational control technologies tailored to local energy environments and the various uses of captured CO₂. This ensures efficient and stable CO₂ recovery across diverse operating conditions, enhancing the technology's viability.
Overview of the Testing
For this demonstration, CarbonNest is deploying a compact DAC device that previously achieved over 200 hours of continuous stable operation in external conditions in Ishikari, Hokkaido, between November and December of 2025. This device will be installed at the SUISO no MORI hub for about one month, where its CO₂ capture performance will be evaluated in Aichi's warm and humid climate. This testing phase, referred to as Phase 1, will also explore the potential utilization of factory waste heat for future applications.
Future Perspectives
Following this demonstration, CarbonNest aims to combine its compact DAC technology with Niterra's assets to further develop carbon recycling initiatives using recovered CO₂ as a resource. Their operational control expertise positions them to achieve stable and cost-effective recovery even in varying environmental conditions. Through collaboration with Niterra, CarbonNest aspires to shape a new future for CO₂ utilization.
Comments from Niterra
According to Keisuke Kure, Niterra's Global Strategy Division Head, the business vision of CarbonNest encapsulates a strong alignment with their objectives for achieving carbon neutrality. They anticipate that by combining CarbonNest's superior operational control technologies with Niterra's extensive resources, they can accelerate the co-creation and societal implementation of carbon recycling technologies.
Statements from CarbonNest's Leadership
CarbonNest's CEO, Takashi Kawasaki, remarked, "Our vision of ‘CO₂ into Energy’ is focused on transforming atmospheric CO₂ into a powerful resource for local communities. Participation in Niterra's SUISO no MORI project is a significant step forward in demonstrating the potential for CO₂ utilization and carbon cycling. We remain committed to advancing the practical implementation of CO₂ utilization through our collaboration with Niterra."
Vision: CO₂ into Energy
The guiding vision of CarbonNest is centered around the idea of distributing DAC systems widely so that CO₂ can be captured and subsequently recycled into local energy, fuels, and industrial resources. This aims to foster a self-sustaining energy ecosystem.
About the SUISO no MORI Project
Launched on May 21, 2024, Niterra's SUISO no MORI project aims to foster a hydrogen society and a carbon circulation ecosystem by serving as a collaborative hub for innovative technologies and ideas from startups. The SUISO no MORI hub is an integral part of this mission.
