Exploring Collective Immanence at Kaya Hanasaki's Latest Exhibition

Kaya Hanasaki's Exhibition: ENERGY DOSE

Kaya Hanasaki's new exhibition, titled ENERGY DOSE – collective immanence, will be held at the Courtyard HIROO, a multifaceted cultural space located in Hiroo, Tokyo. This exhibition, in collaboration with Yuka Shiohara, will run from May 8 to May 30, 2026, offering a unique exploration of personal energy through participatory art.

The main feature of Hanasaki's exhibition, called PANACEA PILL – collective value, revolves around the concept that what people often seek externally already resides within them. This participatory installation utilizes the methods of instruction art, creating an environment where visitors can infuse their personal energy into five distinct FRP (Fibre Reinforced Plastic) sculptures representing Love, Peace, Enlightenment, Desire, and Void. Attendees can also engage in a pricing experiment, where the median of their collective energy infusions will set the formal sales price for the artworks. This innovative approach invites viewers to reconsider the very concept of value in art, echoing the philosophy of Joseph Beuys, who argued for art's potential to redefine society as a collective sculpture.

In addition to the main exhibits, there will be flat artworks displayed, and a workshop space where participants can delve deeper into the themes presented. The exhibition will simultaneously showcase Flowers for Urban Maladies 2.0, a follow-up to the previous collaboration between Hanasaki and Shiohara.

Overview of 'Flowers for Urban Maladies 2.0'

The previous exhibition, held in 2022, was about re-imagining urban environments and the lost relationships within them through a floral motif. Shiohara’s large paintings symbolizing the universal remedy juxtaposed with Hanasaki’s performances exploring past professions lost to urban development, revived echoes of humanity amidst ancestral and modern tensions.

Four years later, in ‘Flowers for Urban Maladies 2.0,’ questions of value and societal connections continue to resonate, with new murals by Shiohara linking the past with contemporary life. The act of offering a bouquet as a prescription for the urban malaise remains relevant, reflecting an evolving dialogue about the losses and values in urban spaces today.

Kaya Hanasaki and Yuka Shiohara invite you to immerse yourself in this thought-provoking journey, questioning and redefining the meanings behind our personal energies and collective actions.
