Pure DC Achieves Milestone in Sustainable Energy Use



Pure Data Centres Group, also known as Pure DC, has made history by successfully completing Europe’s first proof-of-concept (PoC) for biomethane in the realm of data centers, marking a significant step in sustainable energy practices. This accomplishment took place at their Dublin campus, where they reached an impressive 100% decarbonization of natural gas consumption by employing renewable biomethane.

A Year of Transformation



Throughout 2025, Pure DC covered all operational natural gas needs with renewable biomethane. This initiative relied on independently certified gas attributes and adhered to recognized Irish and European accounting methods. They utilized Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin (RGGOs), along with Guarantees of Origin (GOs) for biomethane, purchasing these certificates based on megawatt-hours corresponding to their gas usage.

These certifications ensure compliance with essential sustainability, traceability, and product chain requirements. They also align with practices established in the European renewable gas market, the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS), and the technical RE100 criteria, which are integral to the overarching frameworks for corporate decarbonization and climate reporting.

Aligning with National Policies



Importantly, the PoC supports Irish policies aimed at reducing emissions, promoting transparency, and phasing out the unmitigated use of fossil fuels, while acknowledging the transitional role of renewable gases where grid energy use is currently limited. It also resonates with Ireland’s national biomethane strategy, which outlines a roadmap for expanding sustainable biomethane production and boosting demand across various sectors of the economy.

By acquiring certified biomethane attributes linked to gas grid injections, Pure DC contributes positively towards market demand signals that assist in growing the Irish renewable gas sector. The hope is that this initiative will drive demand and growth in Ireland's renewable gas market, all while facilitating a reduction in operational emissions.

Future Ventures and Goals



Recognizing that renewable gas serves more as a transitional solution than a final goal, Pure DC is actively exploring biomass purchase agreements and ongoing biomethane imports from the EU. This strategy aims to enhance supply security and foster the development of the local renewable gas market.

In parallel, the company is advancing long-term strategies that are consistent with Irish policy for large users and the Climate Action Plan. These efforts include engaging with local renewable energy projects, implementing demand-side management measures, and using energy storage along with integrated grid design. They also plan to introduce energy efficiency measures to further lower emission intensity.

Innovative Infrastructure



The DUB01 facility has been operational since 2024, designed to handle high-performance computing workloads supported by advanced cooling and power supply infrastructures. Located within the fiber-rich Ballycoolin area, Pure DC plans to distribute 54 MW across three data centers: DUB01 (14 MW), DUB02 (24 MW), and DUB03 (16 MW). Furthermore, in 2023, they acquired an additional 25 acres to explore future expansions capable of supporting up to 90 MW, contingent on regulatory approvals and electricity supply.

Sustainability initiatives are embedded at the campus, such as utilizing biochar in landscaping to minimize water consumption and employing Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) for backup power and short-term primary generation. The facility features its own energy system designed for 99.999% operational availability, complemented by a 200 MW connection to a thermal gas power plant.

Community Benefits and Infrastructure Support



Where feasible, the project anticipates integrating heat into district heating networks, potentially benefiting local communities and businesses by providing controllable generation capacity. This step is vital for meeting security of supply demands and supporting grid stability, aligning with the guidelines set forth by Irish policy for large consumers.

In summary, Pure DC's groundbreaking efforts in establishing a biomethane success in data centers not only emphasize the organization’s commitment to decarbonization but also lay a substantial foundation for future sustainability initiatives across the sector.
