Japanese Doctor's Mission to Provide Healthcare in Kenya's Underserved Regions

A Japanese Physician's Heartfelt Contribution to Kenya

Dr. Daisuke Shiojiri, a Japanese physician, has dedicated his life to serving the communities in Kenya where medical services are scarce. His ongoing efforts were highlighted in February 2026 when he led a large-scale free health camp in collaboration with the Africa Child Education Fund (ACEF). This initiative, held in the Ena region located about four hours from Nairobi, aims to address healthcare disparities both locally and globally.

Dr. Shiojiri, who spent his childhood in Kenya, established the Matsukawa Group with a vision to support sustainable healthcare access. Many residents of Ena face significant barriers to healthcare due to economic hardship and geographic isolation, making visits to hospitals virtually impossible. Thanks to a vigorous outreach campaign via local radio, around 2,000 community members came to the site from morning to evening, seeking medical attention.

In cooperation with local Kenyan physicians, the medical team offered consultations for common ailments, as well as screenings for conditions like hypertension. For those exhibiting serious symptoms, referral letters were issued to ACEF's primary hospital and regional facilities equipped for further care. This long-term commitment emphasizes building a sustainable healthcare framework rather than merely providing temporary solutions.

Engaging Future Global Health Professionals

The medical camp also served as an educational platform for future health care professionals from Japan. Four medical students and a young doctor, along with nurses, midwives, pharmacists, and educators, volunteered during this initiative. They encountered diverse medical scenarios that are seldom seen back home, allowing them to broaden their perspectives and enhance their expertise significantly. Interacting in English and Swahili with local medical staff not only enriched their experiences but also ignited a strong interest in international healthcare and social contributions.

A Personal Connection to Kenya

For Dr. Shiojiri, Kenya isn't just a professional undertaking; it's deeply personal. At the tender age of nine, he moved to Kenya and tragically lost his younger sister to malaria shortly thereafter. This heart-wrenching experience propelled him to study at the University of Nairobi's medical faculty, where he faced the harsh realities of the local healthcare environment while working as an obstetrician. After returning to Japan and specializing in infectious diseases, Shiojiri continues to visit Kenya annually, dedicating time to support and empower local health workers.

In Dr. Shiojiri's words: "Kenya is my second home. I feel a profound sense of responsibility and fulfillment every time I witness local residents celebrating our arrival and forming long lines in anticipation of medical assistance. As Japan grapples with the alarming rise of HIV cases, I am committed to eradicating new infections in my country. Through partnerships with NPOs, we strive to raise awareness about accessible HIV testing for just 500 yen. Our mission is to provide world-class medical care, regardless of geographical barriers."

About the Matsukawa Group

The Matsukawa Group, named after a region in East Africa, reflects a philanthropic endeavor established by Dr. Shiojiri's parents, focused on running an orphanage for children orphaned by AIDS. The Personal Health Clinic, also founded by Dr. Shiojiri, emerged from the deep desire to eliminate infectious diseases, especially HIV, from the world. The name ‘Matsukawa’ serves as a reminder of the clinic’s mission. Beyond routine consultations, the clinic is actively engaged in knowledge sharing at conferences and partaking in CSR activities to tackle social issues through healthcare.
