Tokyo's Iconic Kumade Gets a Major Makeover at City Hall

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has recently unveiled a striking new kumade at the entrance hall of its main building, enhancing the city’s rich cultural heritage. This traditional Japanese decoration, long associated with good luck and business prosperity, has been a staple at the Tokyo City Hall for nearly two decades. The original kumade, which adorned the entrance for about 20 years until December last year, has been replaced with a freshly renovated version, which is not only larger but also more visually striking.

A Fresh Look for a Historic Symbol

On March 29, 2025, the new kumade, measuring approximately 2.5 meters square with a handle length of 1.7 meters, was officially mounted on the wall of the City Hall’s entrance hall. Compared to its predecessor, the new kumade boasts a head that is 30 centimeters wider and longer. This design, with its expansive shape, draws inspiration from the kumade's historical role as a talismanic symbol that has captivated the Japanese populace since the Edo period. Traditionally, kumade are believed to ‘bring in’ fortune and success in business, making them an essential part of Japanese culture.

The new kumade weighs in at an impressive 210 kilograms, which is an increase of 40 kilograms from the previous version. It is vibrantly painted and features a variety of decorative items that carry auspicious meanings, including colorful tai (sea bream), tortoises, maneki-neko (beckoning cats), and the protector of fishermen, Ebisu. At the center of this artistic creation is ‘Okame,’ a deity symbolizing happiness and good fortune. Surrounding it are wooden plaques inscribed with wishes for “safety in the city” and “countless visitors.” Remarkably, the new kumade also incorporates several wooden plaques related to Tokyo’s government initiatives, including references to “DX” (digital transformation).
