Taiwan and U.S. Industry Leaders Collaborate on AI-Driven Transportation Innovations
Taiwan and U.S. Industry Leaders Collaborate on AI-Driven Transportation Innovations
In Detroit, a monumental gathering of industry leaders from the United States and Taiwan took place during the ITS Welcome Reception & Dinner, hosted by Taiwan Excellence. This event coincided with the ITS America Conference and Expo 2026, emphasizing the significance of cross-sector collaboration in bridging the gap between innovative transportation technologies and their actual deployment in real-world scenarios.
The reception emerged as a vibrant platform where participants exchanged insights and forged new partnerships, ultimately focusing on the future of intelligent and connected transportation systems. Key players, including Ming-Ya Lin from TECO Chicago and Effie Huang from the Taiwan Trade Center Chicago, highlighted the vital role of collaboration in accelerating the rollout of next-generation intelligent transportation solutions.
One central theme that resonated throughout the evening was the challenge confronting the intelligent transportation community: how to transform promising technologies into practical, scalable, and sustainable deployments. Taiwan's companies showcased their readiness to adapt to changing U.S. market expectations, which increasingly call for collaborative efforts rather than isolated products. Consequently, stakeholders are looking for partners who can help translate technological advancements into ready-to-implement solutions within city infrastructures, various transportation corridors, fleets, and integrated systems.
Bobby McCurdy, Vice President of Policy and Advocacy at ITS America, outlined the broader context of U.S.-Taiwan cooperation in transportation modernization. He asserted, "International collaboration on transportation innovation is a vital enabler of our shared safety and mobility goals. The United States and Taiwan both have significant strengths that can contribute to this essential endeavor."
Transitioning Technology to Real-World Applications
Virginia Lingham, a senior vice president at WSP USA and an ITS World Congress Board member, linked the readiness of technology deployment to the industry's overarching safety mission. She stated, "We aim for a future where vehicles stop at red signals, collisions are a thing of the past, and all road users, including cyclists and pedestrians, can travel safely. Technology is a fundamental element in achieving this vision."
Illustrating this point, several Taiwanese companies highlighted how they are preparing for real-world applications. EverFocus demonstrated the integration of real-time video intelligence into fleet accident prevention and driver behavior monitoring, showcasing AI-enabled technologies that contribute to safer and more efficient operations.
IBASE emphasized the significance of roadside equipment and low-latency traffic data processing, revealing how edge AI can enhance decision-making by placing computing power closer to the vehicles and infrastructure. MiTAC Digital focused on the integration of connected fleet data, optimizing factors like insurance, maintenance, and safety management through advanced video telematics and vehicle data systems.
These presentations underscored a shared understanding that the future of collaboration between the U.S. and Taiwan hinges on the effective deployment, integration, and scaling of advanced technologies within existing transportation networks.
Fostering Scalable Mobility Collaboration
Stefon Crawford, partner at GM Ventures, highlighted the crucial role of investment in propelling mobility innovations toward market adoption. He mentioned that funding continues to support groundbreaking technologies spanning immersive connected experiences, the electric vehicle ecosystem, advanced manufacturing, and vehicle efficiency. Crawford asserted, "By providing capital to innovative companies, we contribute to a transformation where transportation becomes safer and smarter."
For Taiwan's enterprises, entering the U.S. market serves as an opportunity for collaboration, field validation, and partnership establishment, yet it also necessitates a commitment to localization and patience as they work on turning pilot projects into scalable business models.
Through its participation in ITSACE 2026, Taiwan Excellence spearheaded industry dialogues focused on transportation safety, mobility, and infrastructure performance, laying the groundwork for future collaborative efforts. This event also serves as a precursor to the upcoming ITS World Congress 2029, which Taiwan is set to host, indicating a promising trajectory for continued partnerships aimed at solving shared challenges, integrating systems, and achieving effective real-world deployment of intelligent transportation solutions.
