Canadian Solar Partners with Axpo for Battery Energy Storage in Italy
Canadian Solar Inc., a prominent player in solar technology, has made a significant stride with its energy storage solutions division, e-STORAGE, by entering a collaboration with Axpo, a leading Swiss energy provider. This partnership will lead to the deployment of a state-of-the-art 8 MW/40 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in southern Italy, marking e-STORAGE's debut project within this country and reinforcing its expansion across Europe.
Project Overview
The construction is set to commence by the end of 2026 at Axpo's Rizziconi power plant located in Calabria, with plans for grid connection and commercial operations slated for early 2028. The battery storage system will be strategically installed at Axpo's existing combined-cycle gas power plant, utilizing its established grid connectivity to enhance power balancing and flexibility.
Under their agreement, e-STORAGE will provide a comprehensive solution that combines advanced SolBank 3.0 battery blocks, effective power conversion systems, and its proprietary EQ-S Energy Management System — all managed under a singular accountable structure. The battery units, developed within Canadian Solar's own facilities, ensure full transparency within the supply chain, contributing to the efficiency and reliability of the project.
Addressing Local Challenges
The Rizziconi initiative is tailored to meet specific regional needs in southern Italy, where midday solar output often surpasses the grid's absorption capacity. This has been a persistent issue in Calabria, a region known for its elevated energy costs and suboptimal grid connectivity compared to northern Italy. By capturing excess solar energy typically wasted and redistributing it during peak demand periods, the project aims to alleviate pressure on a constrained network while simultaneously reducing electricity costs for local consumers, who have historically relied on remote energy supplies.
Frank Amend, the Group Head of Batteries and Hybrid Systems at Axpo, expressed enthusiasm regarding the commencement of this project, emphasizing its importance in bolstering grid flexibility and advancing the energy transition throughout Europe. He stated,
“This will be an important addition to our portfolio as we execute our ambitious BESS strategy.”
Jeff Roy, the President of e-STORAGE, also shared insights, noting that this entry into Italy’s dynamic storage market represents the adaptability of their technology to real-life energy grid necessities.
“We see this agreement as the foundation for a longer-term collaboration supporting customers across Europe,” he commented.
