Third Annual 'Marine Day' Event Teaches Kids Lifesaving Skills at the Beach

Third Annual 'Marine Day' Event: Lifesaving Skills for Kids

On July 20, 2026, a significant event took place at Shinmaiko Marine Park in Chita City, Aichi Prefecture, in commemoration of Japan's 'Marine Day,' which is celebrated every year. Organized by Open House Group’s Nagoya branch in collaboration with the Aichi Lifesaving Association, this workshop aimed to teach families about water safety and prevention of heatstroke, especially concerning the increasing number of water-related incidents.

In the context of nationwide extreme heat this summer, LOGOS Corporation, an outdoor brand based in Osaka, provided high-performance tents and parasols to set up a shade area on the beach. This 'Shade Service' allowed families to enjoy a more comfortable learning experience while educating them about protections against both heat and water accidents.

Urgency of Water Safety Education

With the tragic rise in water-related accidents across the country, particularly during the summer holiday season, it has become crucial for children participating in activities like river play and swimming to be aware of safety measures. For the third consecutive year, families visiting the beach were provided with insights not only into beach safety but also into safety measures relevant when playing in rivers. This comprehensive, hands-on program included essential training to prepare families for potential emergencies.

Event Highlights

1. Comprehensive Water Safety Workshop

The workshop featured active lifeguards from the Aichi Lifesaving Association who demonstrated various lifesaving techniques and preventive measures:
  • - Heatstroke Prevention: Participants learned about the importance of hydration, recognizing early symptoms, and when to take breaks.
  • - Understanding Risks: Differences between the dangers present in rivers (like swift currents) and at sea (like rip currents) were discussed, focusing on how to protect oneself.
  • - Proper Use of Life Jackets: Using life jackets donated from previous events, participants practiced proper size selection and donning techniques.

2. Practical Training in the Water

In the latter part of the workshop, children donned life jackets and, under the guidance of lifeguards, entered the sea. They practiced vital techniques to maintain buoyancy and conserve energy while waiting for rescue. They were trained to call for help using whistles and hand signals, ensuring they understood how to attract attention without panicking. The kids eagerly absorbed the teachings, focusing intently on the instructions.

3. Shade Oasis: Collaboration with LOGOS

On this sweltering day, LOGOS set up their outstanding Q-TOP tents and large umbrellas. This 'Shade Oasis' provided a much-needed respite from the harsh sun and served as a safe zone for hydration and relaxation between sessions, contributing significantly to combating heat-related health issues.
