This surge is detailed in the Hydrogen Council's Global Hydrogen Compass 2026, a crucial report that underscores both the growth and growing importance of hydrogen technology in the global energy landscape. The report highlights that more than 570 projects are currently in action, contributing to 6.9 million tons per annum (Mtpa) of committed capacity. Notably, 90% of these projects are either operational or currently under construction.

The findings, a collaboration with McKinsey & Company and informed by feedback from around 70 global CEOs, illustrate that the industry is progressing while adapting to a rapidly changing strategic environment. Over the past year, operational capacity has nearly doubled, with projections suggesting it will double again next year as the ongoing projects start contributing to the energy mix.

China has established itself as the largest market, accounting for over 50% of global committed renewable hydrogen capacity and around 90% of the new operational capacity introduced since 2025. Following China, Europe has emerged as the second-largest hydrogen market, experiencing a 35% increase in investment since 2025 and leading in the number of projects initiated.

Meanwhile, the United States remains at the forefront of low-carbon hydrogen deployment, capturing approximately 75% of the world’s committed low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia capacity.

To unlock the full potential of the anticipated 11 Mtpa clean hydrogen demand by 2030, current policies can secure 6 Mtpa. However, realizing the remaining 5 Mtpa will require urgent governmental actions to facilitate existing policy commitments.

For policymakers, the highest priority lies in implementing enabling incentives, mandates, and effective carbon pricing instruments that send clear demand signals to the market. In parallel, industries must focus on cost-effective strategies to meet rising demand, necessitating a strong push to lower production costs and develop the necessary supporting infrastructure.
