Upcoming Seminar on Drones in Defense

A seminar titled "The Role of Drones in Reinforcing National Defense Strategies" will be held on June 26, 2026, hosted by Masayuki Sawada, the Director of Sawada Engineering Office.

Seminar Details

This enlightening session will take place from 2 PM to 5 PM at the SSK seminar room in the Zaimax Nishishinbashi Building, located in Minato, Tokyo. Participants can choose to attend in person or join via live broadcast on Zoom. There is also an option for on-demand viewing of the recorded session for two weeks following the event.

Focus of the Seminar

The war in Ukraine has transformed into the first large-scale conflict dominated by drones, particularly after 2024. The substantial damages incurred on the battlefield have primarily resulted from the extensive use of kamikaze drones. Traditional units such as tanks, artillery, and infantry are rendered vulnerable once spotted by reconnaissance drones, with little defense against the subsequent drone attacks. Moreover, intercepting inexpensive kamikaze drones with costly missiles severely diminishes sustainability in warfare. Essentially, the Ukraine conflict has shifted the paradigms of both strategies and tactics to favor drone technology.

To adequately prepare for future conflicts, it is vital to establish a domestic mass production system for reconnaissance, attack, and intercept drones that outmaneuvers potential adversaries. Countries across Europe and the United States are rapidly evolving their drone technology to match what's seen in Ukraine, often collaborating with Ukrainian manufacturers to implement these innovations or utilizing their indigenous drones in real combat scenarios.

Key Topics to be Addressed

1. Transformational Drone Warfare in Ukraine – Examination of how Ukraine's conflict represents a historic shift in combat strategy.
2. Similar Shifts in Iran – Investigation of drone implications in altering strategic landscape in regional conflicts.
3. International Efforts in Europe – Overview of partnerships with Ukrainian drone manufacturers for collaborative production.
4. U.S. Initiatives – Review the provision of intercept drones to Ukraine.
