Amazon Drivers Unite for Union Recognition at DAX7
In a major show of solidarity, more than 100 Amazon drivers at Los Angeles' DAX7 facility took to the streets recently to press their employer for union recognition. Aligning themselves with Teamsters Local 396, these drivers are demanding a formal negotiation for better working conditions, fair compensation, and enhanced benefits.
The DAX7 facility is one of Amazon's pivotal last-mile delivery centers and has become the latest focal point for unionization efforts among drivers in Southern California. This movement aims to tackle pressing issues, including insufficient pay, overwhelming delivery quotas, and hazardous working environments that come with the territory.
Randy Korgan, who leads the Teamsters' Amazon Division, emphasized the determination of the drivers, stating, "The movement to unionize Amazon grows stronger every day because of courageous workers like the drivers at DAX7." He criticized Amazon's narrative that these drivers are not their employees, calling it misleading. The Teamsters are determined to ensure these drivers receive the respect they deserve, alongside the contract they are entitled to.
Victor Mineros, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 396 and International Vice President for the Western Region of the Teamsters, underscored the sacrifices made by Amazon workers. He stated, "Nobody sacrifices more and receives less than Amazon workers. These individuals toil endlessly for a multitrillion-dollar company, and this is a fight for the future of the logistics industry. We are exhilarated to welcome the DAX7 drivers into the Teamsters fold."
The sentiment echoed among DAX7 drivers was anything but subdued. Sara Venegas, a driver with three years of experience at the facility, articulated the struggles faced by workers under Amazon's operational model: "Amazon is the richest company on the planet, but we can't even afford to live near our jobs. We are tired of meager pay, a lack of benefits, and the company's lies about our employment status. We are done with their games. Joining thousands of other Amazon Teamsters is a proud moment for us, as we join the ranks of the toughest union in America."
The ongoing organizing efforts at DAX7 come on the heels of similar movements in other parts of Southern California, including Victorville, City of Industry, Palmdale, San Bernardino, and Riverside. Collectively, these efforts contribute to a nationwide push by more than 10,000 Amazon warehouse and delivery workers advocating for unionization at the e-commerce giant.
Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters boasts a robust membership of over 1.3 million across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Their focus remains on advocating for workers' rights, and the ongoing mobilization at Amazon is a testament to their commitment.
As this movement gains traction, it reflects a growing consciousness among workers in the gig economy seeking fairness and acknowledgment from industry giants. The DAX7 drivers’ persistence in standing up for their rights could serve as an inspiring narrative for other workers navigating similar challenges across the logistics and delivery sectors.
