Celebrating 150 Years of Tenzan Sake: A Landmark Package Design Wins JPC2026 Award

Celebrating Tenzan Sake's Milestone

Tenzan Sake, a revered sake brewery based in Saga Prefecture, Japan, proudly marks its 150th anniversary with the release of a special commemorative sake and its stunning packaging design. This design has gained notable recognition by winning the Alcohol Beverage Category Award at the 65th Japan Packaging Competition (JPC2026), organized by the Japan Printing Industry Association. This noteworthy achievement represents the first award for Daiichishiko Co., Ltd., who was responsible for the label and packaging design.

A Celebration Rooted in Tradition

The commemorative sake, titled "Tenzan 150th Anniversary Sake," reflects a deep connection to the local community of Oki City, where Tenzan Sake has been a longstanding entity. The sake bottle features a unique label created from the renowned 'Nao's Handmade Washi,' which has been produced in Saga for over 300 years. The label is elegantly cut to represent the majestic mountain range of Tenzan, which watches over the sake brewery.

Moreover, the packaging crafted from locally sourced Hinoki wood signifies the marriage of quality materials with craftsmanship. This wood is processed by the esteemed furniture manufacturer, Regunatec, based in Saga. The deep blue color featured prominently throughout the design, known as 'Tenzan Blue,' symbolizes the pristine waters sourced from the mid-slope of Tenzan, which are essential for the sake brewing process.

The winning design of the JPC2026 was celebrated not only for its aesthetic appeal and alignment with the brand's identity but also for effectively communicating the ethos and history of the Tenzan brewery. It serves as a reminder of the rich heritage and collaborative spirit of the local community that has supported Tenzan Sake over the years.

Sustainable Practices in Sake Production

As part of their commitment to sustainability, the Tenzan 150th Anniversary Sake utilizes alpha rice, which allows for the omission of the steaming process – a significant source of CO2 emissions in traditional sake brewing. This makes the commemorative sake not just a symbol of history but also a proactive step towards sustainable practices in the sake industry.
