Strategic Partnership Between CHAI and NACHC to Enhance AI Adoption in Community Health Centers
In a promising advancement for healthcare technology, the Coalition for Health AI (CHAI) and the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) have joined forces. This strategic partnership aims to facilitate the safe and responsible adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Community Health Centers (CHCs) across the United States.
CHCs provide vital healthcare services to approximately 34 million patients at more than 17,000 locations. As AI continues to transform the landscape of healthcare delivery, the partnership aims to address the growing need for responsible AI integration into these community-centric health systems. Recent statistics show a significant uptick in AI adoption among healthcare professionals, with usage jumping from 38% in 2023 to 66% in 2024. Additionally, nearly half of the community health initiatives implementing AI have reported improvements in patient care outcomes. Despite these advancements, challenges persist; 60% of CHCs and 70% of rural CHCs have indicated that financial constraints inhibit their ability to adopt emerging technologies.
Recognizing these barriers, CHAI and NACHC are committed to ensuring that CHCs and their patients are prioritized in the evolutionary journey of AI in healthcare. By leveraging NACHC's Science, Education, Practice, and Policy (SEPP) framework, the partnership will develop a comprehensive infrastructure specifically designed for CHCs and safety-net providers nationwide. The collaboration will focus on four key areas:
1. Research and Validation: The organizations will jointly conduct research to understand the nuances of AI adoption in CHCs. This includes validating AI tools suited for safety-net settings and their impact on healthcare outcomes. Furthermore, they aim to establish a certification program for AI vendors wishing to partner with CHCs.
2. Educational Programs: CHAI and NACHC intend to create and disseminate evidence-based educational resources and training programs. These initiatives will enhance AI literacy among CHC professionals and the broader safety-net workforce.
3. Responsible AI Integration: The partnership will support the ethical integration of AI technologies into clinical and operational workflows in CHCs, ensuring that they align with established safety and ethical standards.
4. Policy Advocacy: Together, they will advocate for fair and transparent policy regulations governing AI usage in primary care settings.
As part of this collaboration, NACHC will lead an inaugural survey of CHCs to assess the landscape of current technology use and explore gaps that could signal opportunities for innovation in clinical practice. The insights gathered will be vital in shaping the creation of future AI tools and technologies in community health settings.
Moreover, NACHC plans to co-chair CHAI's tiger team initiative, which will explore how AI could enhance the efficiency of Medicaid eligibility and enrollment processes, particularly those altered by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA). With a significant number of CHC patients relying on Medicaid, these efforts could streamline processes that are critical for service delivery.
Kyu Rhee, MD, MPP, President and CEO of NACHC, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration. He emphasized the importance of integrating CHCs into the evolving dialogue on AI in healthcare, noting that improving the technology’s implementation is crucial for organizations serving nearly 34 million patients, including 1 in 5 residing in rural areas.
Dr. Brian Anderson, President and CEO of CHAI, echoed these sentiments, stating that this partnership marks a pivotal shift in the landscape of primary care delivery. He highlighted the unprecedented potential that lies in their collaboration to bring about safe AI adoption across diverse populations, regardless of geographical or financial barriers.
In a bid to expand the outreach and effectiveness of their initiatives, CHAI and NACHC will also involve Health Center Controlled Networks (HCCNs) and Primary Care Associations (PCAs) in their Assurance Resource Provider Network. This network will foster collaboration among CHCs to improve operational and clinical practices through enhanced health information technology.
Dr. Anderson is set to officially introduce this partnership as the keynote speaker at the upcoming CHI Community Health Conference on August 17-19, 2025, in Chicago. This conference serves as a significant gathering for clinicians, executives, consumer board members, and other stakeholders in the community health domain, making it the ideal venue to launch such a pivotal initiative.
In summary, the partnership between CHAI and NACHC heralds a new era for community health centers. It aims to ensure that these centers can leverage AI effectively to enhance healthcare delivery, address the needs of diverse populations, and navigate the financial challenges tied to technology adoption. Ultimately, this collaboration aspires to make strides in healthcare equity and access, setting a precedent for responsible AI use in the industry.
