Empowering Children with Chocolate: A Unique Learning Experience
On January 1, 2025, NIJIN Academy in Minato City, an alternative school dedicated to supporting children not attending traditional school, will collaborate with Morinaga, a prominent confectionery company based in the same area, to host a special class aimed at educating children on societal issues through the lens of chocolate making.
This initiative promotes community collaboration between local businesses and educational institutions, fostering social contributions that are rooted in the Minato area. The project is linked to Morinaga’s social contribution campaign, "1 Chocolate for 1 Smile," which uses a portion of chocolate sales to support the education and living conditions of children in cacao-producing countries, such as Ghana.
The unique class will offer children the chance to explore the relationship between food and society from a Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) perspective. Participants will engage actively with their learning and acquire insights into pressing social issues through interactive experiences.
Class Highlights
Throughout the class, children will gain valuable knowledge through special lectures delivered by Morinaga employees, covering topics such as:
- - The journey of cacao beans from farm to chocolate.
- - The current situation of children in cacao-producing nations.
- - How consumers can contribute to social causes in meaningful ways.
Following the informative sessions, children will have the opportunity to participate in a hands-on activity, creating chocolate sand cookies. This experiential learning will allow them to discover the joy of food creation, realizing how their culinary activities can connect to the smiles of those across the globe.
NIJIN Academy continues to provide educational programs that nurture the potential of children who may struggle in traditional schooling environments, allowing them to develop their unique strengths through cooking and exploratory activities. By participating in such projects, these children can learn invaluable life skills while also fostering interest in global social issues.
