Huawei and Partners Win GSMA Award for Protecting Jaguars Through Tech4Nature Project in Mexico
Huawei, in collaboration with its partners, has made significant strides in wildlife conservation through the Tech4Nature project, which operates in the Dzilam de Bravo Nature Reserve located in Yucatán, Mexico. This initiative is designed to monitor and protect the endangered jaguar population by integrating cutting-edge technology in nature conservation efforts. Recently, this groundbreaking project was honored with the Global Mobile (GLOMO) LATAM award at the GSMA M360 LATAM 2026 event, recognizing its contributions to environmental preservation and social impact in Latin America.
The Tech4Nature Mexico project, launched in 2022 and currently in its second phase, is a collaborative effort involving the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Huawei, the government of Yucatán, C Minds, Yucatán Polytechnic University, and the local community of Dzilam de Bravo. The initiative has deployed advanced technological tools including AI-powered species detection, individual identification, community-led monitoring, and governance, reflecting the potential of cross-sector collaboration for biodiversity conservation.
Samira Herrera, Director of Communications and Public Relations at Huawei Mexico, expressed pride in receiving the GLOMO award, stating, 'This accolade reflects the power technology has when it serves people and the planet. Tech4Nature Mexico exemplifies how intersectoral collaboration can create tangible and positive impact on communities and biodiversity.'
The project has accomplished remarkable milestones since its inception, deploying a network of 26 camera traps and 60 acoustic devices that have identified over 147 species, including 40 that are threatened. Most notably, the system has tracked 16 individual jaguars, providing critical insights into their behavior and movements, which are essential for their conservation strategies and for maintaining the ecological balance of the reserve.
Moreover, the cloud-based solutions from Huawei facilitate the processing and analysis of field data. The system has captured over 100,000 photographs and 600,000 audio recordings, which are analyzed automatically to bolster the monitoring of local wildlife and their ecosystems. The data insights garnered from these efforts enable more effective decision-making processes, ultimately influencing public policies aimed at biodiversity conservation.
Additionally, the impacts of the Tech4Nature project extend beyond ecological data; it has also led to a physical increase in the reserve area, expanding from 69,000 hectares to 104,000 hectares. By employing technologies such as AI and cloud storage, the initiative has developed a sustainable scientific conservation model that merges scientific innovation with community engagement, showcasing how technology can serve the greater good of ecosystems that underpin economies.
The M360 LATAM 2026 event, held on May 13 and 14, brought together leaders from the technology ecosystem, mobile networks, governments, and relevant sectors to explore how technology can be harnessed to work toward a better future for all. The GLOMO LATAM Awards commend the pioneers who redefine the concepts of technology, connectivity, and social progress in the region. The recognition bestowed upon the Tech4Nature Mexico project underscores its innovative nature and its potential to deliver significant social and environmental benefits throughout Latin America.
Ultimately, Huawei continues to affirm its commitment to building a more sustainable and inclusive future through the Tech4Nature Mexico initiative. This project serves as a powerful reminder of how technology can be a crucial tool for environmental conservation and community development, paving the way for responsible stewardship of our natural resources.
