Greenberg Traurig Expands Energy Practice with Toshiyuki Yoshida
In a significant move to strengthen its Global Energy & Natural Resources Practice, international law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP has appointed Toshiyuki Yoshida as a Shareholder. His impressive background and extensive experience across major markets—including Japan, the United States, and the Asia-Pacific region—are set to bolster the firm's capabilities in navigating complex energy transactions and projects.
Yoshida, who previously worked at KL Gates LLP, brings over two decades of experience in providing legal counsel on a variety of energy sectors. His career began at a prominent Japanese trading company, where he served as an investment manager, providing him with invaluable insights into both the business and legal facets of the energy landscape. His expertise encompasses oil and gas ventures, liquefied natural gas initiatives, renewable energy projects, and conventional power developments.
In his new role, Yoshida will be based in the New York office of Greenberg Traurig and will collaborate closely with teams located in Asia, Houston, and Washington, D.C. His role involves acting as a bridge for clients based in Asia who are looking to invest in U.S. energy projects, thereby facilitating smoother transactions and understanding of legal requirements.
Kenneth M. Minesinger, co-chair of the firm's Energy & Natural Resources Practice, emphasized the strategic importance of expanding their team to stay ahead of the rapidly evolving global energy market. "New technologies and shifting political landscapes mean our clients face continuous changes. Toshi brings an exceptional combination of legal and business experience that will enhance our global team's ability to address these challenges effectively," he remarked.
Over the past year alone, Greenberg Traurig has successfully attracted around a dozen lawyers across multiple locations, including Washington D.C., Albany, Berlin, Riyadh, and Tokyo. This expansion has created a collaborative international network capable of tackling a broad spectrum of energy-related matters.
In a joint statement, New York Co-Managing Shareholders, Scott J. Bornstein and Ejim Peter Achi, expressed their enthusiasm about Yoshida’s addition. They noted that his existing relationships in Japan, coupled with a deep understanding of the broader Asian market, will be vital for international clients aiming to invest in the United States.
A native of Japan residing in Singapore and previously in Australia, Yoshida was drawn to Greenberg Traurig due to the firm’s growing footprint in the APAC region. He appreciates the importance of having legal experts on-site who can meet clients face-to-face and understand localized needs.
He reiterated, “Clients in Japan and other parts of Asia often have U.S. operations, but the essential investment decisions are typically made from their headquarters. At Greenberg Traurig, we’re in a position to meet those demands effectively.”
With its expanded presence across Asia, including Shanghai, Seoul, and Singapore, Greenberg Traurig is well-equipped to assist clients at every stage of their energy projects. Yoshida will closely work with colleagues in Singapore, including Joseph Kim and Stella Bae, both of whom are recognized experts in Asia’s energy infrastructure and project finance sectors.
Yoshida’s portfolio covers a diverse array of projects, from renewables such as solar and wind to cutting-edge technologies like hydrogen and carbon capture. He serves businesses in various issues related to energy, power generation, utilities, and carbon solutions. His services include advising on project financing, drafting joint operating agreements, and navigating host government contracts.
Highlighting the pressing nature of the energy sector today, particularly amid geopolitical instability and fluctuating prices, Yoshida noted the necessity for countries and companies to maintain a balanced energy portfolio—including fossil fuels, renewable sources, and nuclear energy. He concluded, “Greenberg Traurig offers a robust platform that allows us to explore all these avenues. Our global reach provides clients with expert legal counsel throughout the project lifecycle.”
