Discover the Unseen: Akimoto Tsukue's Art Room Ghost Exhibit in Fukuoka

Introduction

The YUGEN Gallery FUKUOKA is set to host an exciting solo exhibition titled Art Room Ghost, showcasing the works of Akimoto Tsukue. This event marks the artist's first solo exhibition in Kyushu and is scheduled to run from November 15 to November 27, 2025.

About the Exhibition

Art Room Ghost delves into Akimoto's unique approach to art by revisiting the fundamentals of creativity. The exhibition features fifteen thought-provoking pieces that explore the concept of expression through various artistic mediums. Akimoto describes the title’s significance: the Art Room symbolizes a space for creation, while the Ghost reflects the artist holding onto remnants of their work and journey, creating an interesting dichotomy between existence and creativity in a structured world.

Akimoto Tsukue's Journey

Since winning the Second Hobo Nikkan Itoi Shimbun Manga Award in 2012, Akimoto Tsukue has made notable strides in both illustration and comic artistry. His involvement in the UNKNOWN ASIA Art Fair in 2017 elevated his status in the art community, allowing him to exhibit across various countries, including South Korea, China, and Taiwan. Furthermore, he has participated in numerous international art fairs, showcasing his diverse range of work.

Akimoto articulates his artistic philosophy: "Although I behave like a painter in galleries or art fairs, the essence of what I create has not shifted significantly since my elementary school days. It often feels as though I am still in my school’s art room, almost like a ghost. This feeling is not negative; it embodies a sense of returning to my creative roots."

New Works and Techniques

In this upcoming exhibition, Akimoto will debut new works utilizing familiar materials from his childhood, such as drawing tools, alongside carbon paper—an element he finds particularly appealing at the moment. These fresh creations promise to diverge from his past drawing styles, making it a noteworthy aspect of the exhibition as he ventures into new terrain creatively while staying true to his roots.
