Japan Leather Industry Association Launches JLIA Sustainable Business Certification
The Japan Leather Industry Association (JLIA), led by President Hitoshi Fujiwara, has officially launched its "JLIA Sustainable Business Certification." This pioneering initiative aims to promote sustainability practices among leather companies through a framework rooted in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This new certification evaluates companies' contributions from environmental, social, and economic perspectives, referencing international ESG standards and regulations to ensure a reliable assessment process. The logo features a motif of a cherry blossom and the letter "S" symbolizing sustainability.
Background and Objective of the Certification Program
As global priority shifts towards environmental consciousness, human rights, animal welfare, product safety, and transparency, the leather industry, which has traditionally worked in harmony with nature, must also adopt sustainable management practices. Responding to this pressing need, JLIA has established the new certification program. It aims not only to enhance the industry's global reputation but also to encourage local players to adopt responsible practices that benefit society and the environment.
Key Features of the Certification
Benefits of Certification
Companies that achieve certification can expect a wide range of benefits:
- - Enhanced international credibility through proof of adherence to SDGs, ESG, and CSR criteria.
- - Creation of new business opportunities.
- - Strengthening of internal systems and improved employee awareness.

- - For domestic companies, application submissions can be made in Japanese.

The certification encompasses the entire leather supply chain, including raw leather traders, tanners, wholesalers, manufacturers, distributors, and retailers. Companies can progress through three levels of certification: GOLD, SILVER, and BRONZE, allowing gradual advancement toward higher standards.
Aiming for Further Development of the Leather Industry
Through this certification, JLIA strives to nurture new values while respecting the leather industry's traditions and its connection to nature.
