Saxony-Anhalt: Leading the Charge for Future Industries by 2026

Saxony-Anhalt: Setting the Stage for Future Industries

Saxony-Anhalt is rapidly emerging as a leading hub for innovation and technology, despite facing a challenging economic environment characterized by high energy prices and bureaucratic hurdles. As we look toward 2026, the state is witnessing substantial investments from major corporations, reinforcing its reputation in the high-tech, pharmaceutical, logistics, and chemical sectors.

As of now, the state, with a population of approximately 2.14 million, benefits from its compact geography, efficient decision-making processes, and robust transportation infrastructure. These advantages attract a myriad of businesses seeking sustainable growth trajectories.

Major Investments Shaping the Landscape

One of the most significant developments is Novartis's decision to establish a groundbreaking production facility for radioligand therapies in Halle (Saale). This state-of-the-art technology is poised to revolutionize personalized cancer treatment. According to Sven Schulze, the state’s Economy Minister, this investment underscores Novartis's confidence in Saxony-Anhalt’s innovative capabilities and reflects the state's ambition to become a premier destination for future industries.

Halle’s proximity to leading research institutions, as well as access to the Leipzig/Halle Airport and modern logistics setups, were crucial factors in Novartis's decision.

Another notable project is Wintipak’s construction phase expansion at Star Park Halle, which will enhance capabilities for aseptic packaging solutions. This expansion indicates Wintipak’s commitment to sustainable production processes and long-term stability in European production networks.

Furthermore, Avnet is investing over 225 million euros to establish a high-performance distribution center for electronic components, including semiconductors in Bernburg (Saale). This facility is set to create approximately 700 new jobs, with operations commencing in spring 2026. The center aims to emphasize sustainable energy sourcing and modern automation in its logistics operations, positioning it as a leading project within the region.

Semiconductor Industry Advancements

In the semiconductor sector, Mercury is making significant advancements by developing an engineering and manufacturing center in Schönebeck, scheduled to open in spring 2026, employing around 200 skilled professionals. This initiative is driven by the site’s excellent location in Germany, facilitating access to European high-tech clients.

Additionally, Daimler Truck has recently completed its world’s largest center for spare parts in Halberstadt, which created over 650 jobs in two years. With a commitment to CO₂-neutral logistics operations, this facility is setting industry benchmarks for sustainability.

Saxony-Anhalt is also home to small to medium enterprises like Ramme Electric Machines, an electric motor manufacturer for boats, highlighting the worldwide resonance of innovation made in Saxony-Anhalt. At the same time, the Bitterfeld-Wolfen chemical park continues to grow with Campo Amargo enhancing its production capabilities for specialized reagents, thus bolstering the state’s chemical and biotechnological expertise.

Merz is investing 50 million euros for expanded capacities of highly specialized active ingredients at its Biopharmapark Dessau-Roßlau.

Looking Ahead

These ambitious projects collectively demonstrate that Saxony-Anhalt is leveraging its past successes to pursue new milestones in 2026. The state is positioning itself as an attractive environment for businesses focused on growth, innovation, and the preparation for future challenges.

Through strategic investments and governmental support, Saxony-Anhalt is on track to further solidify its status as a premier location for industry leaders and innovators, paving the way for sustained economic growth and technological progress in the years to come.
