Mars Impact Fund Invests $2M in Healthcare for Cocoa Farmers in Côte d'Ivoire

Mars Impact Fund Allocates $2M to Enhance Healthcare Access

In a pivotal move to support agricultural communities, Mars, Incorporated has granted $2.07 million to Elucid, a social enterprise dedicated to implementing health programs within agricultural supply chains in Côte d'Ivoire. This partnership, aimed at enhancing healthcare for cocoa-farming families, reflects Mars' commitment to community well-being and resilience.

Background of the Initiative

The funding initiative, known as the “Better Lives, Outcome and Opportunities through Medical Access” (BLOOM) program, spans three years from 2026 to 2029. The primary goal is to assist up to 12,750 cocoa-farming households in enrolling in national health insurance, thereby improving their access to high-quality, affordable healthcare. By removing upfront costs and reducing administrative hurdles, this program seeks to facilitate healthcare access for these vulnerable communities.

Rationale Behind the Investment

Mars recognizes that the sustainability of its cocoa supply chain hinges on the health and prosperity of the communities from which it sources. As a significant player in the cocoa market, Mars aims to positively impact the lives of those who grow this vital ingredient for its renowned confectionery products. The investment in health services not only supports family health but also aims to bolster the rural economy by promoting resilience against health-related shocks that may threaten livelihoods.

According to Amos Kouassi, Country Director for Elucid in Côte d'Ivoire, the partnership embodies a growing awareness of the essential role of farmer health in securing sustainable sourcing. He emphasized, "By integrating healthcare services into agricultural frameworks, we can mitigate vulnerabilities, enhance household resilience, and yield measurable benefits for farming families, businesses, and public health." This collaborative approach intends to fortify health systems by making healthcare more accessible to those on the front lines of cocoa production.

Plans for Healthcare Enhancement

The funding will also streamline rural health infrastructures and extend the reach of vaccination campaigns to over 200,000 individuals, including around 150,000 children. This infrastructure improvement process will be complemented by approximately $2 million in matching funds from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, to ensure robust healthcare delivery amidst the unique challenges these communities face.

Michelle Grogg, Executive Director of the Mars Impact Fund, remarked, "The resilience of our cocoa supply chain is directly linked to the health and well-being of the communities from which we source our cocoa. Through our collaboration with Elucid, we are striving to enhance access to essential health services for cocoa-farming households. This will help mitigate the risk of financial burdens associated with health care needs." Such initiatives reflect Mars' ongoing pledge towards creating a sustainable future for both their business and the farmers that supply them.
