Celebrating 15 Years of Impact and Hope
On July 10, 2026, ScholarCHIPS is set to honor a remarkable milestone at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. The non-profit organization, dedicated to supporting college-bound youth affected by parental incarceration, will celebrate its 15th Annual Awards Ceremony. This momentous occasion not only highlights the organization's journey but also welcomes its largest cohort of students in history.
Over five million children in the United States have faced the painful experience of having a parent incarcerated. Despite this staggering statistic, few organizations focus specifically on empowering these youth to pursue higher education. ScholarCHIPS believes in investing in these young individuals, demonstrating a powerful message that success can arise from adversity.
This year, 26 exceptional scholars from various states, including D.C., Maryland, New York, Florida, North Carolina, Texas, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Missouri, Arizona, California, and Alaska, will join the ScholarCHIPS family. Each student embodies incredible talent and potential, refuting narratives that often overshadow their capabilities with challenges. Among the new scholars are aspiring doctors, filmmakers, engineers, and public servants who are committed to uplifting their communities and shaping their futures.
Over the past 15 years, ScholarCHIPS has successfully awarded more than $700,000 in scholarships and direct support to over 120 students. The organization's holistic approach extends beyond financial aid, providing mentorship, mental health resources, emergency assistance, technology, and lifelong alumni support. This comprehensive support system empowers students not only to gain access to education but also to persist through to graduation.
Yasmine Arrington Brooks, the founder and executive director of ScholarCHIPS, reflects on the organization's mission: “Fifteen years ago, we started with a simple belief: parental incarceration should never limit a child's future.” Arrington’s own experiences as a child of an incarcerated parent fueled her passion for this important cause. Under her leadership, ScholarCHIPS has blossomed into a national leader in supporting these youths.
The keynote address at this year's ceremony will be delivered by Isabel Coronado, a prominent advocate for the children of incarcerated parents and a public health leader. Coronado's work focuses on family cohesion and reducing the generational impact of incarceration. Drawing from her personal experience as the child of an incarcerated father, she stands as a powerful voice for change in the criminal justice system.
This celebration will also recognize graduating seniors, alumni achievements, and the generous contributions of donors, volunteers, and partners that have helped transform hundreds of lives over the years. With various interview opportunities and media coverage expected, the event promises to illuminate the narratives of resilience and hope that ScholarCHIPS champions.
As ScholarCHIPS continues to break barriers and redefine possibilities for children of incarcerated parents, its commitment remains unwavering: every child deserves a chance at a bright future. Join the celebration to witness the incredible journeys of these talented young individuals and the positive impact of ScholarCHIPS on their lives. Together, we can continue to build a future where every child can thrive, regardless of their circumstances.
