Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service Raises Major Funds for Free Legal Aid Through 'A Taste for Pro Bono'

Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service Raises $150,000 for Legal Aid

The Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service (MVLS) celebrated an incredible milestone during its annual fundraiser, A Taste for Pro Bono, held at the historic Baltimore Museum of Industry. This year, the event gathered over 250 guests and more than 50 sponsors, culminating in a stunning $150,000 raised to support free legal services for low-income residents across Maryland.

Event Highlights

Taking place on April 23, the fundraiser featured a delightful atmosphere where attendees enjoyed a variety of gourmet food prepared by Zeffert & Gold. A live DJ set the lively tone, complemented by a special culinary appearance from celebrity chef John Shields, known for his famous Maryland crab soups. The evening was not just a feast but a celebration of community spirit, highlighting the importance of accessibility to legal aid.

Susan Francis, the Executive Director of MVLS, expressed immense gratitude towards sponsors, donors, and community partners. She stated, “This year’s event was a true celebration of service and solidarity. With the generous contributions, we can extend our reach and provide more legal support for issues such as housing, family law, and more.”

Impact of the Fundraiser

The funds raised during A Taste for Pro Bono are expected to significantly enhance MVLS’s capability to serve those in need. Last year, MVLS made a substantial impact by assisting 11,521 individuals, helping 6,135 families navigate their legal challenges, and successfully closing nearly 3,000 cases through the commitment of dedicated volunteer attorneys and tax professionals.

Francis also acknowledged their presenting sponsor, Saul Ewing LLP, along with all supporters who share the belief that justice should not depend on income. This collaboration and community involvement are vital to expanding the network of legal aid provided to those who need it most.
