In a festive initiative aimed at fostering international friendships, Shibuya Ward, under the leadership of Mayor Ken Hasebe, will be hosting an exciting culinary exchange event. This gathering aims to welcome students from middle schools in Honolulu, Hawaii, to experience a special Hawaiian menu at Yoyogi Junior High School in Shibuya.
This event marks a significant milestone in the newly formed sister city partnership between Shibuya Ward and Honolulu City, established in the sixth year of the Reiwa era. The partnership aims to enhance collaboration in various fields like tourism, culture, education, and sports. As part of this ongoing relationship, the culinary exchange aims to promote mutual understanding and cultural enrichment.
On July 19th, coinciding with the National Day of the United States—a day established to celebrate international participation and cultural empathy during the Osaka-Kansai Expo—July has been designated as "Honolulu City Exchange Month" in Shibuya. During this month, Yoyogi Junior High School will host a series of diverse activities related to Hawaiian culture.
On July 17th, the Hawaiian Tourism Board will assist in facilitating an introduction class presented by the visiting Honolulu students. This class will not only provide insights into Hawaiian culture but will also feature a lunch exchange program showcasing delicious Hawaiian meals. The menu includes fried rice, long rice soup (a type of clear noodle soup), flavorful huli huli chicken, and refreshing pineapple.
In addition to the culinary delights, students will have the unique opportunity to participate in a pickleball experience class. This fast-growing sport has gained immense popularity in Honolulu, and students will be provided with specially crafted paddles designed for beginners. The goal of the class is to introduce this exciting sport to the Shibuya youth, encouraging sportsmanship and international camaraderie.
