Celebrating an Icon: Maki no Kai's Ryukyu Dance Performance
In a significant celebration marking 80 years since the end of World War II,
Maki no Kai, the prominent Ryukyu dance troupe, will grace the stage at the
Cerulean Tower Noh Theatre in Shibuya, Tokyo, on
September 12, 2025. This event not only acknowledges the long-standing traditions of Ryukyu dance but also pays tribute to the cultural heritage that has thrived despite numerous historical challenges, including the fall of the Ryukyu Kingdom and the Okinawa War.
The Essence of Ryukyu Dance
Ryukyu dance, with its roots deeply intertwined with the Okinawan court culture, reflects both beauty and resilience. This performance by Maki no Kai is particularly unique as it encapsulates the journey of this expressive art form, which has been preserved and passed down through generations. Shida Maki, the daughter of the Living National Treasure
Shida Kazuko, leads this homage to those traditions, aiming to revive the essence of Ryukyu dance and inspire future generations.
