A Historic Adventure for Asahi Rugby School
In an exciting initiative, the Asahi Rugby School, the champions of Japan's elementary school rugby tournament, will soon embark on a trip to South Korea. This journey is sponsored by Looop, a company dedicated to advocating for renewable energy and community empowerment, led by CEO Soichiro Nakamura.
Overview of the Trip
The trip, joyfully named the "Hero’s Cup Champion Tour 2026 supported by Looop," is scheduled to take place from March 28 to 29, 2026, in Seoul. Leading the expedition is Akihito Yamada, a distinguished former Japanese national rugby player and Vice-Commissioner of the Hero’s Cup.
The participants include 29 players from Asahi Rugby School and accompanying guardians, who will experience a mix of training and cultural exchange activities. The highlight will be a rugby clinic and friendly matches with the Siheung G Sports Rugby Team, a newly formed team in South Korea, which had its first official training in tackle rugby this year. This initiative aims to foster cross-cultural understanding and provide the young athletes with a broader perspective of the world through sports.
From Vision to Reality
Looop's journey began in 2011, when it was established post the Great East Japan Earthquake to provide renewable energy solutions. This year marks its 15th anniversary, and in line with its philosophy of empowering the next generation through sport, it is thrilled to sponsor the overseas expedition for the Hero's Cup champions.
The foundational discussions for this initiative emerged from conversations between Nakamura and Yamada regarding what Japan needs to secure a Rugby World Cup victory. They acknowledged the challenges faced by Japan’s rugby youth structure, particularly the late starting age compared to other countries and the limited exposure to international competitions. The Hero's Cup, with over 8,000 participants, offers a unique opportunity to raise the bar for young players and broaden their horizons.
Trip Schedule
The itinerary includes:
- - March 28: Departure from Kansai International Airport, arrival in Seoul for the "Championship Celebration Dinner."
- - March 29: A detailed training clinic led by Yamada as well as lunch and then a friendly match.
Specific activities will include skill training and mini-games designed to mix Japanese and Korean players, offering a unique opportunity to grow through shared experience.
Personal Touch from Yamada
Akihito Yamada is set to accompany the group throughout the trip, sharing his insights and experiences with the young players. Reflecting back on his own formative years, he emphasizes the profound impact that exposure to international cultures and standards has on young athletes. His role is not only to coach but to inspire, fostering a commitment to global competition.
He expressed,
“I'm excited to travel with the champions of the Hero's Cup to Korea. Experiencing different cultures at a young age will undoubtedly be a significant energy boost in their lives. I am committed to supporting their first steps onto the world stage.”
A Meaningful Engagement
Looop and Yamada both recognize that this isn’t just about winning matches; it’s about instilling aspirations and allowing students to explore the possibilities that lie beyond Japan's borders. Looop CEO Soichiro Nakamura shared his own words of encouragement:
“This trip is not merely a vacation; it is a challenge to understand different cultures and strengths. The experiences here could light the path for your futures.”
The 18th edition of the Hero’s Cup brought together 306 teams consisting of around 8,000 children, showcasing the vibrant youth rugby culture in Japan and culminating with Asahi Rugby School taking home the championship title.
Looking Forward
As they prepare for this international journey, the excitement is palpable among participants, parents, and everyone involved in the rugby community. This initiative is just one of many ways Looop aims to empower young individuals, reminding us that through sports, dreams can indeed reach far and wide.
