Overview of the DX Hackathon in Tourism
Tobu Top Tours, based in Sumida, Tokyo, has recently joined forces with the Future Society Design Organization, headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, to host a unique hackathon aimed at university students and above. This event, designed to deepen understanding of digital transformation (DX) in the tourism sector and the emerging Web 3.0 landscape, marked another step in their collaborative efforts to innovate and promote local revitalization through tourism.
Launched on February 1st of this year, the Future Society Design Organization focuses on projects that fuse technology with social advancements. The hackathon serves as a platform for students and professionals to share a vision of regional development driven by Tobu Top Tours' diverse business initiatives. This collaboration aims to reach the next generation, providing insight into cutting-edge practices beyond traditional tourism.
The Event Activities
During the hackathon, participating students were divided into small groups, each under the guidance of a company employee. They engaged deeply with worksheets that helped dissect the future of tourism through digital transformation. Utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI), teams crafted innovative applications, including a digital map, an AI-powered tourist guide, and a digital point card.
The teams worked diligently within a time limit, developing their concepts into viable projects in just a few hours. A panel consisting of company employees and executives rigorously assessed the entries, evaluating them based on originality and practicality.
In the end, the most outstanding projects were awarded for their creativity and real-world application, with many participants sharing positive feedback, stating, “This experience was invaluable compared to what other companies offer,” and “I learned that I could actively contribute through the use of AI.”
Future Initiatives
Looking ahead, Tobu Top Tours plans to enhance relationships with the Future Society Design Organization, various enterprises, local governments, and the student community. They intend to actively advance sustainable regional revitalization projects that merge digital technology with local challenges. Moreover, through initiatives in DX and Web 3.0, there will be a strong focus on nurturing digital talent.
Understanding Hackathons
For context, a hackathon—a combination of the words 'hack' and 'marathon'—is an event where engineers and designers come together to create applications or other technological solutions within a limited timeframe. These gatherings foster innovation and collaboration, pushing participants to produce tangible results in creative environments.
This hackathon exemplifies Tobu Top Tours’ commitment not only to advancing their business but also to empowering students, equipping them with relevant skills for the ever-evolving digital landscape, and enhancing the future of tourism.
