Ascend Elements and GEM Sign MOU for Sustainable Battery Recycling and Materials in Europe

In a significant move towards sustainable energy solutions, Ascend Elements, a leading U.S. manufacturer of engineering battery materials, and GEM Co., Ltd., a trailblazer in battery materials and recycling from China, have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) focused on battery recycling and engineered materials production in Europe. This collaboration seeks to capitalize on the growing demand for sustainable battery systems in line with the European Union's regulations, particularly the EU Battery Regulation and the EU Battery Passport initiative.

The recently signed MOU by GEM's Chairman, Professor Xu Kaihua, and Ascend Elements’ CEO, Linh Austin, aims to leverage each company’s expertise to promote the recycling of lithium-ion batteries and the production of technical battery materials. The partnership is set to combine GEM’s advanced recycling technology and mass production capabilities with Ascend Elements’ established commercial presence in Europe.

This strategic initiative involves creating an advanced framework for battery recycling, focusing on the recovery of critical minerals and the manufacturing of engineered materials. The ultimate goal is to develop a localized, circular supply chain that addresses both market needs and regulatory requirements.

Professor Xu Kaihua remarked, 'This partnership with Ascend Elements marks a milestone in GEM’s vision for a greener and more sustainable future. Our collaborative efforts will drive innovation in battery recycling and engineered material production while fostering a local circular industrial ecosystem in Europe.' This initiative aims to meet the escalating regulatory and market demands for recyclable and traceable batteries, thereby contributing to Europe’s ecological and economic landscape.

Linh Austin added, 'Our collaboration enables us to mitigate risks associated with our ambitious European strategy, drawing on GEM's production experience to swiftly expand our capacity to meet the continent's demands.' He emphasized that their partnership is geared toward establishing a fully integrated, localized industrial battery ecosystem that meets sustainability and regulatory standards while supporting the energy transition and enhancing economic value.

Founded in 2001, GEM Co., Ltd. has emerged as a leader in China's Circular Economy, excelling in waste recycling and standing as a top player in the global tungsten carbide and new energy industries. Meanwhile, Ascend Elements, which began its operations in 2015, has positioned itself as a front-runner in supplying critical minerals and engineering battery materials for the lithium-ion battery sector, producing sustainable lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) and precursor cathode active materials from recycled battery sources.

Moving forward, both companies are committed to building a robust partnership that not only elevates recycling technologies but also contributes to achieving a carbon-neutral economy in Europe. Their joint efforts are anticipated to facilitate the establishment of eco-friendly practices that meet the rigorous demands set forth by the EU, paving the way for long-term sustainability in the European battery market.

In conclusion, the signing of the MOU between Ascend Elements and GEM marks a promising beginning in the quest for sustainable practices in battery production and recycling, potentially reshaping the landscape of the battery materials industry while adhering to environmental standards and bolstering the local economies in Europe.
