Kristen Dahlgren, founder and CEO of the CVC and a breast cancer survivor, emphasized the urgency and potential impact of these vaccines. “With almost one in two individuals facing a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime, we cannot afford to waste time. By collaborating and sharing our knowledge, we can expedite the availability of groundbreaking therapies,” she noted.

The two-day symposium, titled Transforming Cancer Care: A Global Think Tank to Accelerate Advances in Cancer Immunity, serves as a platform for leaders from renowned cancer centers, biotech and pharmaceutical firms, along with policy and regulatory authorities. Together, they aim to establish shared objectives and actionable strategies that can enhance the pace of vaccine development and distribution.

Prominent voices, such as Dr. Elizabeth Jaffee from the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, are hopeful about the ability of vaccines to improve the outcomes of existing immunotherapies. “While current immunotherapies are effective for 20% of the most lethal cancers, vaccines can heighten the efficacy against the remaining 80%,” she elaborated, underscoring the importance of recent scientific breakthroughs in making this possible.

An inspiring case is Brad Silver, a patient who received a therapeutic cancer vaccine for stage IV glioblastoma in 2003, defying the prognosis that limited his life to just two months. Now, after more than two decades, he thrives, advocating for wider accessibility to innovative treatments. “I’m not supposed to be here. My experience with clinical trials has shown that a different outcome is possible,” Silver stated.
