Techo International Airport Launches Cambodia's Modern Era in Aviation
Techo International Airport: A New Gateway for Cambodia
On September 9, 2025, Cambodia reached a significant milestone in its aviation history with the inauguration of the Techo International Airport in Phnom Penh. This monumental project, which stands as the nation’s largest aviation infrastructure, is a prideful representation of Cambodian efforts in building a world-class travel hub right in its capital.
A Symbol of Progress
Techo International Airport, which bears the IATA code KTI and ICAO code VDTI, is more than just an airport; it is a gateway to the world. Designed with inspiration drawn from Cambodia's rich cultural and Angkorian heritage, the airport is set to modernize the country’s aviation landscape. The first commercial flight, operated by Air Cambodia, was ceremoniously welcomed with a traditional water salute, symbolizing the start of a new era in Cambodian tourism and business.
Operated by Cambodia Airport Investment Co., Ltd. (CAIC), a partnership between the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA) and the Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation (OCIC), the airport aims to accommodate 15 million passengers annually. This milestone is expected to boost Cambodia's international connectivity, fortify tourism, and promote trade.
A Collaborative Vision
The construction of Techo International Airport is a testament to Cambodia's capability in executing large-scale projects, utilizing the skills of over 200 local engineers and 17,000 workers. This collaborative effort included contributions from local and international contractors, highlighting how Cambodia can harness homegrown talent while also inviting global expertise.
The terminal’s architectural design, crafted by the renowned British firm Foster + Partners, incorporates elements that pay homage to Cambodia's Angkorian traditions. Unique features include spectacular sweeping roof canopies and structural supports resembling the rumduol—the nation’s national flower. With an impressive nine-meter tall statue of Buddha placed prominently, the airport creates a tranquil atmosphere that welcomes visitors with a sense of peace and balance.
Enhancing the Passenger Experience
Techo International Airport is built with travelers’ needs in mind, featuring a diverse selection of retail and dining options that represent both modern global brands and traditional Cambodian offerings. Among them are popular establishments like Starbucks, Malis, and Artisans d'Angkor, providing a mix of familiar and local culinary experiences.
High standards in operational excellence have led CAIC to team up with industry leaders such as Vinci Airports and Singapore Airlines Engineering Company, ensuring that the airport not only functions optimally but also provides a high level of service to passengers.
Looking Ahead
In its first month, Techo International Airport has already made strides in enhancing connectivity by opening two new routes. It even played a pivotal role in temporarily hosting some of Cathay Pacific’s aircraft during Typhoon Ragasa, demonstrating its capability to support international operations in times of need.
Pung Kheav Se, Chairman of OCIC and CAIC, emphasized the occasion by stating, “Welcoming the first passengers at Techo International Airport is a defining moment. It creates new opportunities for Cambodia—both for visitors and investors.”
As Techo International Airport celebrates its inauguration alongside the 25th anniversary of OCIC, it marks more than a new infrastructure project; it symbolizes Cambodia's journey towards economic transformation and greater global presence. This airport stands ready to welcome the world and position Phnom Penh as a significant player in regional air travel.
With these developments, Cambodia is set to soar to new heights, opening its doors to tourists and businesses alike, as it strategically strengthens its connective infrastructure. The Techo International Airport is, indeed, a new chapter in the ever-evolving story of Cambodia, promising ample future opportunities.
