Recognizing the invaluable resources and expertise that universities offer, First Mold is collaborating with notable institutions such as the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (Zhongshan Institute), Zhongshan Polytechnic, South China University of Technology, and Guangdong University of Technology. By tapping into these robust educational platforms, First Mold is not just sourcing talent but is also actively involved in shaping the education and training of future engineers.

According to Michael Wang, the Technical Director, First Mold's strategy focuses on the training of young engineering graduates to meet the precise needs of high-end manufacturing. Instead of merely hiring those already in the job market, the company actively integrates these students into its culture, commencing their training from day one, thereby aligning their education with industry expectations. “We find it more beneficial to cultivate our talent internally,” Wang elaborated. “By working closely with top universities, we ensure that our new entrants fit seamlessly into our processes, particularly in CNC machining and plastic injection molding, where prior knowledge significantly eases their transition.”

Hands-On Training and Real-World Experience

One of the cornerstones of this program is the emphasis on practical, hands-on training. Interns involved receive critical exposure to tooling development, defect analysis, and similar skills pivotal for the plastic molding manufacturing sector. These experiences not only enrich the interns’ learning but also benefit First Mold by creating a pipeline of well-trained professionals ready to contribute to the company’s objectives. Wang noted that many interns are highly competitive in the job market upon completing the program, with several being recommended for employment in other prestigious manufacturers.

Investment in Educational Resources

Further enhancing this partnership, First Mold is also investing in advanced research and skill development centers within these universities. This initiative aims to create dedicated spaces for innovation, where both students and senior engineers can focus on rigorous research and advanced tooling design. James Li, the General Manager, pointed out, “These state-of-the-art facilities will allow our teams to carry out advanced material testing and theoretical research in a controlled environment, which complements our speed and volume production areas significantly.”

Successful Outcomes of the Internship Program

The results of this synergistic approach are evident. Over the course of this program, First Mold has successfully attracted around 140 interns across various manufacturing departments. Impressively, 61 of these students stayed on with the company post-graduation, representing a retention rate of 43%. This success reflects the effectiveness of the internship initiative and its role in nurturing talent suited for the complexities of modern manufacturing.

Production Manager Bowen Wang remarked on the seamless integration of interns into the workforce, highlighting that they have not only adapted but have thrived in different operational areas. “It's remarkable to see how quickly they grasp the nuances of manufacturing—from injection molding to CNC operations. Some even have successfully presented innovative projects to our R&D team, displaying their readiness to contribute meaningfully,” shared Bowen.

Future Directions

Looking ahead, First Mold is keen to expand this initiative by deepening its ties with educational institutions. This includes developing specialized short-course certifications related to CNC operations, plastic injection molding, and mold design, ultimately facilitating students in securing job opportunities globally. The company’s goal is to establish a mutually beneficial relationship with universities, enabling them to tailor education to match real-world needs effectively.
