Emergency Response Initiated After Devastating Earthquake in Mindanao, Philippines

Emergency Response After the 7.8 Magnitude Earthquake

On June 8, 2026, at 8:38 AM JST, a devastating earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale struck the vicinity of Mindanao Island in the southern Philippines. In response to this disaster, the Peace Boat Disaster Relief Center (PBV) from Shinjuku, Tokyo has swiftly initiated emergency aid operations.

Assessment of the Damage

The latest reports from the Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) indicate extensive damage, with at least 65 reported fatalities, 36 individuals missing, 1,447 injuries, and approximately 736,386 people displaced across 176,186 households. Furthermore, 57,252 structures have been reported damaged, and the numbers may continue to rise as assessment efforts proceed.

Immediate Actions and Coordination with Local Partners

In the wake of the earthquake, PBV mobilized staff to the affected area to join efforts with a trusted local NGO, the Balay Mindanaw Foundation Inc. (BMFI). This organization, which has been active in Mindanao for 30 years, has been instrumental in gathering reliable information and coordinating immediate responses.

Initial reports reveal severe damage in several regions, specifically in the southern parts of the island where schools and shopping centers have been reported collapsed. Given the scale of the destruction, PBV has committed to conducting further assessments and providing crucial support. Staff members from Japan were dispatched to Mindanao starting June 14 to gather more data about the situation and tailor their support efforts according to local needs. Emergency supplies, including food, hygiene products, and assistance to shelters, as well as water supply and psychosocial support, are expected to be distributed in the coming days.

Leveraging Past Experience for Effective Local Support

The Philippines is no stranger to natural disasters, and PBV has been actively involved in providing relief during past typhoons since 2013, establishing strong relationships with local partners. Repeated disasters, such as the typhoon in the fall of 2024 and additional earthquake in September 2025, have prompted continuous support efforts from the PBV team.

Learning from past experiences, PBV aims to leverage its established networks and knowledge to ensure that the aid provided is effective and meets the immediate needs of those impacted by this latest earthquake.

Call for Donations and Support

Under the ethos that “people can support people,” PBV seeks to facilitate the quick restoration of safety and stability for those affected by this disaster. The funds collected will be utilized to address urgent needs, support ongoing relief efforts, and assist with community rebuilding and recovery in the long term. Given that the assessment of the overall impact is still underway, PBV is prepared to adapt its aid strategies based on evolving needs in the affected areas.

Your generous contributions are crucial in aiding those facing continued hardship, and we sincerely request your support.
