Pivot Energy Collaborates with CU Boulder on Major Solar Project for Sustainability Goals

Pivot Energy and CU Boulder Join Forces for a Sustainable Future



On August 5, 2025, Pivot Energy, a recognized leader in renewable energy solutions, and the University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder) celebrated the groundbreaking of a significant 5 megawatt (MW) solar project. Located in Weld County, Colorado, this initiative aligns with CU Boulder's commitment to decarbonization and supports its Climate Action Plan goals. The project, expected to be completed in early 2026, represents a crucial step in enhancing the university's clean energy infrastructure.

This collaborative effort was first announced in July 2024 and marks the continuation of a partnership aimed at advancing renewable energy solutions. As part of a twenty-year subscription agreement, CU Boulder will participate in Colorado’s virtual net metering program, established under Senate Bill 21-261. This allows the university to gain credits on its electricity bill for the solar energy produced off-site and ensures it receives 100% of the renewable energy credits (RECs) from the project. The solar array is anticipated to significantly aid the university in achieving its target of a 50% reduction in Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, with a long-term goal of reaching carbon neutrality by 2050.

Chancellor Justin Schwartz emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, “This partnership with Pivot Energy is a powerful example of how CU Boulder is leading with purpose. We're not just talking about sustainability - we're building it into the fabric of our operations in ways that are both financially responsible and environmentally impactful.” This sentiment resonates not only within the university but also throughout the wider community, reflecting a shared commitment to sustainable practices.

Upon completion, the solar project is expected to generate around 9.5 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean energy each year. To put that in perspective, this amount of energy is sufficient to power over 850 homes for an entire year. Additionally, it equates to removing 1,580 passenger vehicles from the road annually. To maximize the benefits of land use, the project will incorporate agrivoltaics—an innovative approach that allows for dual use of land. A flock of approximately 100 sheep will grazed on the site, helping manage vegetation while simultaneously providing the local rancher with additional grazing space. This mutually beneficial setup aims to create a diversified revenue stream for local agricultural operations.
